Selenium is an essential trace element for optimal health but an excess is toxic. The British population is now reckoned to be selenium deficient because more European wheat is now used to make bread at the expense of North American wheat. The difference in the selenium content is caused by the difference in the selenium content of the soils. In geological terms, European soil is older and the selenium has washed out. [Pg.45]

The main aim of these products is to produce a bread that can be eaten by those suffering from an allergy to gluten. This disease is known as coeliac disease. An estimated 1% of the British population suffer from coeliac disease, with only around one fifth being diagnosed. [Pg.191]

The risk of developing serious renal toxicity in people receiving TMP-SMZ, TMP alone, or cephalexin was also estimated in a large British population, and found to be extremely low [68]. Only five cases of acute parenchymal renal disease occurred in the almost 700,000 subjects evaluated, suggesting that none was likely to be caused by the study drugs. Nonetheless, since in these patients TMP-SMZ manifests considerable extrarenal toxicity, reduction of dosage according to GFR, Ccr or to measured blood levels should be considered in patients with impaired renal function. [Pg.357]

Endothelin 1 (ET1) is a 21-amino acid peptide released from bronchial cells that is derived from its biologically stable surrogate, C-terminal-pro-endothelin-1 (CT-pro-ET-1). It has potent vasoconstrictive agonist properties mediated by two receptor types—A and B. The endothelin 1 type A (EDNRA) gene Afill SNP was associated with atopy concurrent with elevated antigen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels in a British population [181]. While the involvement of the EDNRA Afill SNP in atopy may be uncertain however, there is evidence from GWAS studies of an association of the endothelin system with asthma [182],... [Pg.212]

About 25% of the British population smoke. The number has declined from about 50% in the last 30 years. [Pg.155]

The risk of developing serious renal toxicity in people receiving TMP-SMZ, TMP alone, or cephalexin was recently estimated in a large British population, and found to be extremely low [66]. Only five cases of acute parenchymal renal disease occurred in the almost... [Pg.227]

To date, there has been no other description of a preorbital sac with two pockets in artiodactyls. This condition appears to be unique to M. reevesi (or at least in the introduced British populations). Though numerous authors have noted the sloughing of the lining epithelium (Lincoln, 1971 Quay and Miiller-Schwarze, 1971), this appears to be solely limited to the posterior pocket in M. reevesi", the anterior pocket is free of such detritus. The two pockets are separated by a small ridge, wherein runs the preorbital vein. Though this vein has been described in numerous other ungulates (Rehorek et al., 2001), this is the first known instance of a ridge superimposed upon the path of this vein. [Pg.156]

Hammond, Carter 2002, pp. qif whereas the US National Research Council cautiously suggested that the substances were probably harmless and have probably caused no human illness , the UK Academy of Medical Sciences concluded that there was no danger to health for the British population. The Cambridge immunologist Peter Lachmann, founding President of the Academy of Medical Sciences, later admitted that the panel he had chaired had neither seen nor looked for all the evidence BBC Inside Out Documentary series, Clouds of Secrecy (2006). [Pg.545]

An increased mortality from cerebrovascular disease has been observed in a study on lead battery workers (Dingwall-Fordyce and Lane, 1963). An association between lead absorption and the development of hypertension has been claimed, initially in lead-exposed workers. In a US population-based study on adult males, lead was found to be significantly related to both systolic and diastolic blood pressure after controlling for a number of confounding variables (Schwartz, 1985). However, a British population-based study on men aged 40-59 found only a very weak association between PbB and either systolic or diastolic blood pressure. The investigators commented on the problem of adjusting adequately for all relevant confounders, and concluded that it is premature to consider that an elevated lead body burden has a causal influence on blood pressure (Pocock et al, 1985). [Pg.125]
