Brick, fireproofing materials

In the cremation ovens in the concentration camps, the problem of wear and tear on the fireproof brick was greater, not only because of the lesser mass of this fireproof material and its lower quality, but also because of the greater rate of use of the facility, and also due to its operation by untrained personnel whose hostile attitude to their work may very well have been reflected in the carelessness they showed in performing that work. 

The furnace itself is made of quartz, steel or lead. Formerly it was sometimes packed with contact material (fireproof bricks, fragments of quartz, lumps of graphite etc.). At present are furnaces built generally without packing. 

As a result of thermal stresses, the fireproof brick of a cremation oven inevitably wears out, and eventually this becomes a serious hazard. In the civilian cremation ovens which had been constructed in the usual manner and with the building materials normally used in the 1930s, the lifespan of the fireproof brick was about 2,000 cremations, but the Topf firm had managed to extend its durability to... 

The lamp black apparatus consists of a cast-iron pan that holds the liquid feedstock, which is surmounted by a fireproof flue hood lined with refractory bricks. The air gap between the pan and the hood, as well as the vacuum present in the system, help to regulate the air supply and thus enable the manufacturer to fine-tune the carbon black s ultimate properties. Though radiant heat from the hood causes the raw material to vaporize and partially combust. Most of it is converted into carbon black.
