Most manganese today is obtained from ores found in Russia, Brazil, Australia, Republic of S. Africa, Gabon, and India. Pyrolusite and rhodochrosite are among the most common manganese minerals. The metal is obtained by reduction of the oxide with sodium, magnesium, aluminum, or by elctrolysis. [Pg.59]

The lateritic hydrous nickel silicate ores are formed by the weathering of rocks rich in iron and magnesium in humid tropical areas. The repeated processes of dissolution and precipitation lead to a uniform dispersal of the nickel that is not amenable to concentration by physical means therefore, these ores are concentrated by chemical means such as leaching. Fateritic ores are less well defined than sulfide ores. The nickel content of lateritic ores is similar to that of sulfide ore and typically ranges from 1% to 3% nickel. In a humid subtropical area such as the Parana Basin in Brazil, the weathering profile is 30 m thick and has a lower yellow part which is a saprolite. Above this the upper red soil called Terra Rossa consists of kaolinite and iron oxides (Benedetti et al., 1994). The rock being weathered in this area is a 140-million-year-old basalt. Benedetti et al.
