Brandes

Acrilan A brand name for a synthetic fibre, based on a copolymer of acrylonitrile with minor proportions of other unspecified vinyl monomers. See also propenenitrile. 

Adaptations of this method have been proposed in order to take into account the band displacement due either to substitution on the aromatic ring, or to chains of different lengths. The variations consist, instead of measuring the absorbance at maximum absorption, of an integration of the absorbance curve over a specified range (Oelert s method, 1971). The aromaticity factor (ratio of the number of aromatic carbons to the total number of carbons), identical to that given by the ndM method or the Brandes method in the infrared region.

In originally considering the 5 3 mechanism, involving base catalysis, Bennett, Brand, James, Saunders and Williams were trying to account for the small increase in nitrating power which accompanies the addition of water, up to about 10%, to sulphuric acid. The dilution increases the concentration of the bisulphate ion, which was believed to be the base involved (along with molecular sulphuric acid itself). The correct explanation of the effect has already been given ( 2.3.2). 

Additional notes - Nitromethane is found in high performance RC model fuel, usually as a mixture with methanol and various strange lubricants. One particular brand, found at a local hobby shop, was 55% nitromethane. 

Description of Method. Salt substitutes, which are used in place of table salt for individuals on a low-sodium diet, contain KCI. Depending on the brand, fumaric acid, calcium hydrogen phosphate, or potassium tartrate also may be present. Typically, the concentration of sodium in a salt substitute is about 100 ppm. The concentration of sodium is easily determined by flame atomic emission. Because it is difficult to match the matrix of the standards to that of the sample, the analysis is accomplished by the method of standard additions.
