C-B is a synthetically produced hallucinogen that is most closely related to mescaline. It acts primarily on the central serotonin receptors of the brain. Serotonin is a chemical derived from the amino acid tryptophan, and widely distributed in tissues. It acts as a neurotransmitter, constricts blood vessels at injury sites, and may affect emotional states. 2C-B works by interfering with serotonin in the brain.

Several types of serotonin (5-HT) receptors exist in the mammalian brain, two of which are well characterized 5-HTj and 5-HT2 sites. The 5-HT3 sites can be further subdivided into at least three distinct subsets, which differ in their regional distribution and functions and are currently termed 5-HTj, 5-HTjg, and 5-HTic sites.
