Brain-derived neurotrophic factors

Epidermal Growth Factor and Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor [Pg.156]

BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) is a neuro-trophin, i.e. a target-derived growth factor, which is expressed in the brain predominantly in the hippocampus. It acts through its tyrosine kinase receptor, trkB,... [Pg.250]

Neurotrophins (NGF brain-derived neurotrophic factor, BDNF neurotrophin-3, NT-3 NT-4 NT-6) are important regulators of neural survival, development, function, and plasticity of the vertebrate nervous system [1]. Neurotrophins generally function as noncovalently associated homodimers. They activate two different classes of receptors, through which signaling pathways can be activated, including those mediated by Ras and members of the cdc42/rac/rho G protein families, MAP kinase, PI-3 kinase, and Jun kinase cascades. [Pg.843]

Mechanism of Action Lithium s pharmacologic mechanism of action is not well understood and probably involves multiple effects. Possibilities include altered ion transport, increased intraneuronal catecholamine metabolism, neuroprotection or increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor, inhibition of second messenger systems, and reprogramming of gene expression.29... [Pg.592]

Mechanism of Action The mechanism of action of divalproex is not well understood. It is known to affect ion transport and enhances the activity of y-aminobutyric acid. Like lithium, it also has possible neuroprotective effects through enhancement of brain-derived neurotrophic factor.31... [Pg.597]

The neurotrophins comprise a family of highly related molecules that act to support the survival and phenotypic specificity of select subsets of neurons. The neurotrophins (Table 27-2) are small highly basic proteins of approximately 13kDa that dimerize to form the biologically active species [5]. The neurotrophins have a highly conserved structure. This family includes five distinct members NGF,brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neurotrophin 3 (NT3), neurotrophin 4/5 (NT4/5) and neurotrophin 6 (NT6). NT6 is found only in fish and will not be discussed further. [Pg.474]

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor was identified on the basis of its ability to stimulate process outgrowth from peripheral sensory neurons. It was isolated from brain and, upon analysis of its structure, discovered to be highly homologous to NGF [3]. BDNF has a different spectrum... [Pg.475]
