A bowel program is essential as nothing is more disappointing for the patient than an unwelcome bowel movement after washing, dressing, and being placed in an electric wheelchair. One untimely accident can waste an entire day of rehabilitation. Bowel programs prevent skin breakdown, decrease medical complications, and improve the time spent in rehabilitation activities. 

Rice bran fiber has fructo-oligosaccharides - a pre-biotic that helps friendly bacteria to proliferate in the gastrointestinal environment and improves intestinal and colon health (Tomlin and Read, 1988). Recent studies in humans (Kahlon and Chow, 1997) have revealed that rice bran fiber not only normalizes bowel function, but also helps in conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and Crohn s disease, and lowers the lipid levels. Rice bran fiber has been shown to significantly reduce renal stones (Jahnen et al., 1992). It is a good source of fiber in weight loss programs and therapeutic fiber diets for diabetics and heart patients. Fiber diets prevent cancer of the colon and large bowel, control obesity and improve bowel function.

In a randomized, double-bhnd, placebo-controlled trial of the efficacy of intravenous methylnaltrexone (0.015-0.095 mg/kg) in treating chronic methadone-induced constipation in 22 patients attending a methadone maintenance program (oral methadone linctus 30-100 mg/day), methylnaltrexone induced immediate bowel movements in all subjects (32). There were no opioid withdrawal symptoms or significant adverse effects. 

The term therapeutic touch is used to mean a particular hands-on therapy, as well as the entire realm of hands-on techniques, such as Reiki, Touch for Health, Jin Shin Jyutsu, and some forms of Reconnective Healing. More study is required to validate the power of therapeutic touch as a treatment, either stand-alone or in combination with other healing therapies and medical treatments. But because therapeutic touch has no side effects and can help reduce stress, it is a welcome addition to the Kick Acid program, should you choose to incorporate it. 

The FDA has reapproved alosetron for diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome under a limited distribution system. The manufacturer requires a prescription program that includes physician certification and an elaborate patient education and consent before dispensing.
