The current generation of the Cribier-Edwards valve has been renamed the Edwards-Sapien valve (Figure 7.11). Instead of equine tissue, this iteration incorporates bovine pericardium within a similar stainless-steel frame, and the surrounding fabric now extends further to improve coaptation with the annulus... [Pg.134]

FIGURE 20.2 Two tissue-based artificial heart valves are shown above with a U.S. quarter dollar for size comparison. The valve on the far left is a porcine heart valve, while the other valve is constructed of bovine pericardium. Both valves are intended for aortic placement. [Pg.492]

Pericardium, of both bovine and porcine origin, has become widely used in cardiovascular surgery over the last two decades. One particularly common use is as a patch for arteriotomy closure (Fig. 3.3), and bovine pericardium is predominant in the United States. Compared with synthetic patches, bovine pericardium has superior biocompatibility, demonstrates minimal suture line bleeding, and patency can... [Pg.24]

Pericardium has also been used as a heart valve, revolutionizing the field of cardiothoracic surgery. In 1965 Duran and Gunning published their work on successful implantation of a porcine aortic valve into a dog and a human aortic valve was replaced by a porcine bioprosthesis shortly afterward. Soon this ECM-derived medical implant became standardized and conunercially available, and bovine pericardium was also developed for patient use as an alternative to the porcine valve. [Pg.25]

Pericardium from a variety of sources has been used in pericardial closure. In 1984, Yakirevish et al. published the results of a 66 patient series spanning a period from 1977 to 1983. In all cases, glutaraldehyde crosslinked bovine pericardium was used. The authors reported that all of the patients did well postop-eratively and in the three patients who required reoperation at 2.5, 3, and 7 years, the bovine pericardial patch appeared to have prevented epicardial adhesions and... [Pg.50]
