An extensive review of replication of plasmids derived from EBV and from bovine papilloma virus has recently been published (1) readers are referred to this review for a comparison of plasmid replication by these two viruses and for additional details of EBV plasmid replication. The present article will emphasize recent experiments that provide some insights into how the cis-and trans-acting components of the EBV replicon function. In addition, both published and potential applications of EBV-derived plasmid vectors will be discussed. [Pg.155]

Cells were treated for 72 h with the drugs and the number of cells determined by a colorimetric assay. Mammalian plasmid-based vectors, in addition to a prokaryotic replicon and a selection marker to permit DNA replication in E. coli, commonly have a eukaryotic replicon and a eukaryotic selection marker. The replicon usually comes from viruses such as Simian virus 40 (SV40), bovine papilloma virus (BPV) or Epstein Barr virus (EPV). The commonly used promoters are the SV40 early promoter (including its upstream enhancer... [Pg.984]

Natural high-molecular weight sulphated or sulphonated PS, such as cellulose sulphate and dextran sulphate, may be useful non-toxic microbicidal compounds that are active against a variety of sexually-transmitted disease agents, including bovine papillomavirus type 1 and human papilloma virus type 11 and type 40 [111],... [Pg.406]
