Anderson and Bonner made the first detailed kinetic study on the exchange using the isotopic method ( Cr) and a separation method based on the conversion of Cr(II) into Cr(IIl) oxalate and an ion-exchange treatment. Previous investigations (Brady, 1949 Grayson, 1952 Bonner, 1952) in the Purdue laboratories were concerned with the influence of alkyl groups on the rate of ionization of phenyldimethylcarbinyl chloride. These studies indicated that first-order rate constants could be determined with high accuracy for the solvolysis reaction. Moreover, the entropies of activation were invariant in this series of halides. These considerations led to further study of other substituted phenyldimethylcarbinyl chlorides in an attempt to gain a further understanding of the influence of substituent groups on relative reactivity and as a possible model reaction for the assessment of parameters for electron-deficient reactions.

The first attempt to establish the mechanisms of the anomerizations was published by Bonner.79 An extensive study was made of the anomerizations of the D-glucopyranose pentaacetates in mixtures of acetic anhydride and acetic acid in the presence of sulfuric acid. The rate of reaction was found to be greatest in pure acetic anhydride. The anomerizations were shown to be inversions specific for the anomeric center. The data did not allow definite conclusions regarding the reaction mechanisms.
