Bonded media filters

Process filtradon in the manufacture of paints and inks includes the treatment of adhesives, resins, and process and wastewater, as well as paints, varnishes, inks and other coalings. Bag filters (Figure 4.31) and bonded media filters are often used for high-viscosity appUcalions such as the ranoval of oversize particles from paints and inks... [Pg.265]

The two steps in the removal of a particle from the Hquid phase by the filter medium are the transport of the suspended particle to the surface of the medium and interaction with the surface to form a bond strong enough to withstand the hydraulic stresses imposed on it by the passage of water over the surface. The transport step is influenced by such physical factors as concentration of the suspension, medium particle size, medium particle-size distribution, temperature, flow rate, and flow time. These parameters have been considered in various empirical relationships that help predict filter performance based on physical factors only (8,9). Attention has also been placed on the interaction between the particles and the filter surface. The mechanisms postulated are based on adsorption (qv) or specific chemical interactions (10). [Pg.276]

Make separate passes with the photometer probe around the entire periphery of the filter, along the bond between the filter medium and the frame, and along all other joints in the installation through which leakage might bypass the filter medium... [Pg.171]

Extraction discs (0.5 mm thick, 25 to 90 mm diameter) constitute a variation of column-based SPE. These discs allow rapid extraction of large volumes of sample, which is not possible using a small column. The discs are made of bonded-phase silica particles, a few micrometres in diameter, trapped in a porous Teflon or glass fibre matrix. The discs are operated in a similar way to a paper filter on a vacuum flask. After extraction, the analyte is recovered by percolating a solvent through the filter. The major application of this technique is the isolation of trace amounts of compound dispersed in an aqueous medium. [Pg.379]

Therefore, glass fibers are favorable as filter medium because they give a lower pressure drop and are less liable to wetting or combustion. Modern fibrous filter systems are cylinders made from bonded borosilicate microfibers sheathed in reinforcing polypropylene mesh in which the layers increase in fineness and density from the center outward. This type of design can deliver over 3 m3/s of sterile air at 0.1 bar of pressure drop (Quesnel, 1987). [Pg.209]

AOTFs (101, 102) work on a different principal. This type of filter functions by the interaction of light with a traveling acoustic wave in an anisotropic medium. Both crystals and polymers have been used for the anisotropic medium. An acoustic transducer is bonded to one end of the material and an... [Pg.189]

The Michael addition reaction in water suspension medium is also applicable to carbon-carbon bond formation. A mixture of 70a, methyl acetylacetate (76), 72 and water was stirred for 5 h at room temperature, then the reaction product was filtered and dried to give the addition product 77 in 98% yield [34]. Although a similar solvent-free Michael addition reaction of 70a with diethyl malonate at 60 °C has been reported, organic solvent was still necessary to isolate the product from the reaction mixture [36]. [Pg.582]

In preparative-scale (10 M 1-naphthol) experiments, an Ace-Hanovia 450-W medium-pressure mercury arc was used with a Pyrex filter sleeve and a magnetically stirred Ace water-cooled reaction vessel. In experiments involving rose bengal as a sensitizer, tungsten lamp illumination was used. Ultraviolet spectral changes were measured with a Perkin-Elmer model 552A spectrophotometer. For GC-MS analysis, a Hewlett-Packard 5985A instrument was used with a fused silica capillary column coated with a bonded nonpolar polymethyl silane phase introduced directly into the electron Impact ionization source. Compounds were tentatively identified by comparison to published spectra and confirmed where possible with authentic standard materials. [Pg.209]

Yao et al. presented the medium- and long-distance heteronuclear correlation (MELODI-HETCOR) [122] experiment to circumvent this problem of the dominating short-range correlations. A schematic representation of the sequence can be seen in Fig. 4C. The idea is to precede a 2D HETCOR experiment with a so-called MELODI filter of two rotor periods duration that dephases all H spins that are directly bonded (or spatially very... [Pg.336]

Surface coatings applied to filter fabrics can enhance one or more of the filtration properties of the fabric. The coating may be sprayed on as a liquid or laid down as a sheet which is then bonded to the fabric. Microporous polymer coatings may be used to provide a smoother and fine aperture size to the fabric surface, which may enable easier detachment of the cake and prolong the lifetime of the medium. [Pg.95]
