Boiling points apparatus

Statical Method.—The most convenient form of apparatus for determining molecular weight by this method is Beckmann s boiling-point apparatus shown m Fig. 32. 

Cottrell, Frederick G. (1877-1948). American scientist, inventor of an electrostatic precipitator, now known as Cottrell Precipitator, for smoke, dust fumes. Among other inventions are the pebble bed furnace, boiling point apparatus the Cottrell-Daniels process for fixation of atmospheric nitrogen. Boiling-point apparatus. The mercury thermometer can be replaced by a resistance thermometer or other direct-reading thermometric device. 

A modified version of the M-100 boiling point apparatus, made by the James F. Scanlon Co., Whittier, Calif, was used temperature was measured by a Hewlett-Packard model 2801A quartz thermometer. All measurements were made at atmospheric pressure with the temperature corrected then to 760 mm Hg. 

If Dalton s law of partial pressures ( 22.VII A) is assumed, the vapour pressure may be found by measuring the increase of pressure of a gas in a fixed volume when a liquid is allowed to evaporate into it to saturation. Apparatus The test-tube is placed in the heating bath. An older, and probably more accurate, apparatus is the tension tube, in which the liquid is heated in a bulb with a small manometer open at one end to the air, until the levels are equal. Boiling-point elevation can also be used to measure osmotic pressure and tonicity of a solution using just a reflux condenser and a thermometer. The commercially available instrument is the Cottrell boiling-point apparatus. However, this method is affected by the ambient barometric pressure and the presence of volatile solvents in the solution. 

Herman Pines tried to have each student build some piece of equipment to add to the research laboratory, for example, an ozonizer or a boiling point apparatus. We had excellent equipment, and we were able to get a great deal done. The laboratory got the latest equipment appropriate for the type of research in the Ipatieff Laboratory. For example, the Ipatieff Laboratory had a gas chromatograph before most academic laboratories did.

Tnie-boiling-point Apparatus. This equipment is used to obtain a so-called true-boiling-point distillation curve (see Figs. 4-3 and 4-9). An equipment that accomplishes a good degree of fractionation is termi d true-boiling-point equipment.
