Boil test

Subsequent to processing, an inspection is made for incomplete bonding, inside dirt, and glass quaUty. In the case of windshields, rigid optical standards must be met, and these must be evaluated for the completed windshield. Extensive test requirements are described in the appropriate codes (11,12,15,18—24), and they include light stabiUty, resistance to optical distortion, humidity, boil test, abrasion resistance, and assorted impact tests.

Boiling Test.—50 grams of the substance are boiled for 20 minutes in 500 c.c. of water containing 2-5 grams of salt. The appearance of the material—whether split or jellified or not—and that of the water—whether more or less milky and containing more or less sediment—are observed. 

It should withstand the boiling test for not less than 20 minutes without splitting or breaking down, the water showing only a slight floury sediment. 

U50 000 psi IB, minimum = 60 psi and linear expansion, maximum = 0.25. Properties of all examples given in Table II substantially surpass the comercial standard and also surpass the properties of the PF control boards with respect to linear expansion, thickness swelling, and absorption in the one-hour boil test. Internal bonds, both initial and after the one-hour boil test, and water immersion results of the HDA experimental boards were slightly inferior to results of these tests for the PF control boards. Properties of urea-formaldehyde control boards were similar to the PF control boards excepting in the one-hour boil test where complete failure of all bonding took place in about 15 minutes. 

Surface smoothness or its inverse property, grain raising, was not quantified. Qualitatively this property was changed only slightly in the instance of the HDA experimental boards after the one-hour boil test whereas, that of the PF control boards had substantially deteriorated. 

Using NO(5/0+02 treated bagasse and 10% formaldehyde, only, a board was produced at a density of 0,50 having an internal bond of only 15 psi and a water absorption of about 100%, However, it was highly significant that in the 2-hour boil test this board expanded only 30%. Thus, as defined in our work, crosslinking had occurred.

Croup Reactions for Natural Dyes with 10% Sulfuric Acid. Another method of determining if certain types of natural dyes are present is to boil a sample of the dyeing for a short time in 10% sulfuric acid. This test is only carried out for dyeings that have shown little bleeding in the boiling tests in water, ethanol, glacial acetic acid, and ammonia. Berlin blue, which was used mainly for dyeing silk and for printing on cotton, turns light brown-yellow to colorless in the boiling test. A few drops of 4% caustic soda solution are then added, and the solution is poured through a paper filter. After filtration, iron can be identified on the filter, and ferrocyanide can be identified in the filtrate.

Note Data for HMDA with nonpreoxidized wood are from Ref. 82 all other data are from Refs. 83 and 84. Thickness swelling refers to 1-h boil test, except for the last two numbers which refer to 2-h immersion (temperature not given). 

Philippou also experimented with wood particles preoxidized with nitrogen oxide-oxygen by using furfuryl alcohol acid polymer as cross-linking agent and maleic acid as catalyst. He obtained particle board with IB values of 43-159 psi and 9-20% swelling in a 2-h boil test at 0.70-0.77 g/cm densities and 7.5% resin usage 84, 86). The procedure does not differ much in principle from the one where furfuryl alcohol monomer was used.
