Multiple cycles

Rather than use the simple cycle shown in Figure 24.44 for the liquefaction of natural gas, much more complex arrangements using multiple cycles (with both pure and mixed refrigerants) and cascade systems can be used. 

The eclipse is the period during which the stages of virus multiplication occur. This is called the latent period, because no infectious virus particles are evident. Finally, maturation begins as the newly synthesized nucleic acid molecules become assembled inside protein coats. During the maturation phase, the titer of active virus particles inside the cell rises dramatically. At the end of maturation, release of mature virus particles occurs, either as a result of cell lysis or because of some budding or excretion process. The number of virus particles released, called the burst size, will vary with the particular virus and the particular host cell, and can range from a few to a few thousand. The timing of this overall virus replication cycle varies from 20-30 minutes in many bacterial viruses to 8-40 hours in most animal viruses. We now consider each of the steps of the virus multiplication cycle in more detail. 

Another method for generating an epoxidation catalyst on a solid support is to simply absorb or non-covalendy attach the catalyst to the solid support <06MI493>. Epoxidation of olefin 6 with mCPBA and catalyst 8 provides 7 in quantitative yields and with 89% ee. The immobilization of 8 on silica gel improves the enantioselectivity of the reaction providing 7 with 95% ee. Recycling experiments with silica-8 show a decrease in both yield and the enantiomeric excess for each cycle (45% ee after 4 cycles). This is attributed to a leaching of the catalyst from the silica gel. Two other solid supports, a Mg-Al-Cl-LDH resin (LDH) and a quaternary ammonium resin (Q-resin) were also examined. It was expected that ionic attraction between 8 and the LDH or Q-resin would allow the catalyst to remain immobilized through multiple cycles better than with silica gel. Both of these resins showed improved catalytic properties upon reuse of the catalyst (92-95% ee after 4 cycles). 

Chiral aggregates of 40 were subjected to multiple cycles of heating (50°C) and cooling (-10°C) to investigate the thermal stability of the aggregate chirality.29 In the CD spectra of the aggregates at 60%/40% THF/methanol, the bisignate Cotton effect observed at 20°C completely disappears at 50°C... 

Biain adenosinetriphosphatase This enzymatic activity is persistendy associated with brain micFotubules even after multiple cycles of warm-induced microtubule assembly, centrifugation to separate protomer and polymer, cold-induced disassembly, and subsequent centrifugation to remove cold-stable aggregates (White et aL, 1980). The enzyme hydrolyzes boA GTP and ATP, and recent work by Tominaga and Kaziro (1982) indicates that there are two distinct ATP-ases, one that is of low M, (around 33,000) and tubulin dependent in the presence of calcium ion, and the other of larger size and associated with membrane vesicles... 

UV-visible studies were done that showed that the switching times and stability toward multiple cycling was excellent for this material. In the context of the reports by Hammond discussed above, it is interesting that the oxidation process described in Equation 4.3 did not lead to film dissolution, since the net charge of the formula unit for CuPB in its oxidized form should (at least formally) be zero. This suggests that the... 

The exploration potential resides in the ability to find leach caps with lighter isotopic compositions that could indicate areas of leaching, or chalcocite samples that have heavier isotope compositions that correlate with multiple cycles of enrichment. 

In the case of protein separation technologies, further scale-up or multiple cycles will be needed until these challenges of increased throughput from cell culture are successfully met, for instance with, the use of improved resins having much higher binding capacities combined with good resolution.
