Blood production rate

In addition to estimation on the basis of urinary metabolic studies, blood production rates of steroids can be estimated, after administration of isotopically labeled steroids, from the specific activity of the unchanged steroids in the blood. This method was extensively used by Tait and coworkers [322,324]. In 1966 a critical survey of steroid hormone metabolism was given by Baulieu [385]. [Pg.15]

Furthermore Tait and co-workers [322] pointed out the marked difference in the urinary and blood production rates of testosterone obtained in women after injection of radioactive testosterone. He concluded that steroids produced from dehydroepiandrosterone contribute little to the blood production rate of androstenedione and testosterone in normal subjects [403]. According to Tait [324], all the blood production rate of androstenedione in the female and testosterone in the male is due to the same secreted steroid, while the blood production rate of testosterone in the female and androstenedione in the male is due about one-half to the same secreted steroid and one-half to converted precursor. Surface Tension. Interfacial surface tension between fluid and filter media is considered to play a role in the adhesion of blood cells to synthetic fibers. Interfacial tension is a result of the interaction between the surface tension of the fluid and the filter media. Direct experimental evidence has shown that varying this interfacial tension influences the adhesion of blood cells to biomaterials. The viscosity of the blood product is important in the shear forces of the fluid to the attached cells viscosity of a red cell concentrate is at least 500 times that of a platelet concentrate. This has a considerable effect on the shear and flow rates through the filter. The surface stickiness plays a role in the critical shear force for detachment of adhered blood cells. [Pg.524]

In some technological and medical applications protein adsorption and/or cell adhesion is advantageous, but in others it is detrimental. In bioreactors it is stimulated to obtain favourable production conditions. In contrast, biofilm formation may cause contamination problems in water purification systems, in food processing equipment and on kitchen tools. Similarly, bacterial adhesion on synthetic materials used for e.g. artificial organs and prostheses, catheters, blood bags, etc., may cause severe infections.
