Blood cleanser

Alteratives—otherwise known as blood cleansers, which promote health and vitality. 

Traditional use Infusions of the roots of other Eryngium species are used as a blood cleanser and as a sedative. The infusions are also used to treat edema, scrofula, gonorrhea, headaches, heart pain, and various tumors, and are used as a treatment for pertussis, anti-convulsant for epileptics, and as cough medicine, diaphoretic and diuretic. The roots are used to treat mushroom poisoning and bites from venomous animals. The herb is recommended for anania (Khalmatov 1964 Minayeva 1991). 

Traditional use A decoction of the herb is taken as a blood-cleanser and diuretic, to treat coughs, jaundice, headache, fever, gonorrhea, uterine bleeding, erysipelas, and for clearing the intestines. It is also used externally in a bath to treat itching, rashes, and pimples (Khahnatov et al. 1984). 

Traditional Medicine. Root, leaves, and seeds (fruits) of both species have been used in treating cancers decoctions or tea of the root have been used in treating rheumatism, catarrh, gout, and stomach ailments. The root is used as a diuretic, diaphoretic, and mild laxative, among other uses. Decoctions and teas of roots and leaves have been used both externally and internally for skin problems (e.g., eczema and scaly skin) (foster and duke lust tyler 1). The Micmac Indians used the roots and buds to treat sores, and a tea made from the seeds or roots was used by the Cherokee as a blood cleanser (moerman). 

Lid hygiene consists of hot compresses, lasting 5 to 10 minutes and performed two to four times daily, followed by lid scrubs using a mild detergent cleanser such as baby shampoo and a washcloth or prepackaged commercially available lid scrubs (Box 23-2). Dilution of the shampoo is not necessary imless the patient has an unfavorable reaction to full strength. The hot compresses serve to loosen lid debris and dilate blood vessels to allow increased blood flow to the area. The scrubs not only facilitate removal of debris but also serve to lyse bacterial membranes and to reduce the bacterial load. Antibiotic ointment should then be applied directly to the lid margin two to foiu- times daily. Antibiotic drops are used when a secondary conjunctivitis is also present. 

Suspensions or dispersions of particles in a liquid medium are ubiquitous. Blood, paint, ink, and cement are examples that hint at the diversity and technological importance of suspensions. Suspensions include drilling muds, foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, ointments and cremes, and abrasive cleansers and are precursors of many manufactured goods, such as composites and ceramics. Control of the structure and flow properties of such suspensions is often vital to the commercial success of the product or of its manufacture. For example, in consumer products, such as toothpaste, the rheology of the suspension can often determine consumer satisfaction. In ceramic processing, dense suspensions are sometimes molded (Lange 1989) and then dried and sintered or fired into optical components, porcelin insulators, turbine blades, fuel cells, and bricks (Rice 1990 Simon 1993). Crucial to the success of the processing is the ability to transform a liquid, moldable suspension into a solid-like one that retains its shape when removed from the mold. These examples could be multiplied many times over. 

Ascorbic acid has been declared useful in intravaginal contraceptives in reducing sperm motility (899,900). The preservation of human blood by the addition of sodium ascorbate (901) has been found to have some merit. The usefulness of ascorbic acid in the treatment of industrial chemical toxicity (902,903), in the preservation of cut-blooms in water (904,905), in water treatment of the ferruginous type (906), in inhibiting corrosion (907), in treatment for the production of durable creases in cloth (908), and in brightened yarns with high light fastness (909) is mentioned. Adhesive compositions (910) and special cleansers (911, 912) are other potential applications. 

Based on the finding that NDGA is an antioxidant, chaparral has been promoted as an anticancer agent (Tyler, 1993). In a recent review (Sheikh, 1997) of chaparral-associated hepatotoxicity, patients reported using chaparral as a general cleansing tonic, internal skin cleanser, blood thinner, arthritis remedy, antiasthmatic, nutritional supplement, and weight loss product. 

Uses OTC drug active believed to aid digestion, help prevent formation of dangerous blood clots, act as anti-inflammatory agent, help control pain natural flavoring agent in foods and pharmaceuticals tonic, cleanser in COS m sties... 

Employers must provide accessible facilities for handwashing. Wash hands immediately after removing gloves or other protective equipment, and after any hand contact with blood or OPIMs. If a sink isn t available for handwashing, antiseptic cleansers must be provided. In this case, wash with soap and water as soon as possible.
