Mixers are devices that blend combinations of liquids and solids into a homogenous product. They come in a variety of sizes and configurations designed for specific applications. Agitators provide the mechanical action required to keep dissolved or suspended solids in solution. 

Propeller/paddle mixers are used to blend or agitate liquid mixtures in tanks, pipelines, or vessels. Figure 38.1 illustrates a typical top-entering propeller/paddle mixer. This unit consists of an electric motor, a mounting bracket, an extended shaft, and one or more impeller(s) or pro-peller(s). Materials of construction range from bronze to stainless steel, which are selected based on the particular requirements of the application.

With a history of more than 25 years, the free radical-induced grafting of MAH onto polyolefin substrates is one of the most studied polyolefin modification processes.29 "29, 302 The process has been carried out in the melt phase, in various forms of extruders and batch mixers, and there are numerous patents covering various aspects of the process. It has also been carried out successfully in solution and in the solid state. The materials have a range of applications including their use as precursors to graft copolymers, either directly, or during the preparation of blends.297... 

Centrifugal pumps are effective inline mixers for blending and dispersing liquids. Various proprietary motor-driven inline mixers are also used for special applications see Perry et al. (1997). 

The so-called dry mixing or dry blending method has been used for the modification of" particles in the powder technology (59). In this method, surface modification of coarse particles is carried out by mixing fine particles and coarse particles with an auto ceramic mortar or with a centrifugal rotating mixer. This procedure can be applicable for the production of variety of composite magnetic particles. 

Powders are dissolved either directly in the main mix tank or premix tank or indirectly using a vortex-type mixer (Figure 8.1) where powder is dropped into the vortex of a horizontally mounted pump head recirculating the fluid from and to the batch tank. Some specialised versions of this mixer can handle very viscous blending applications (50,000 cP or more). 

Optical techniques were developed - both in situ and on line - over a broad range of applications and various types of light sources. Main examples are solids concentration measurements in particle fluidisation [6,7], as well as gas-solid flow [8], or sample composition in dry blending operations, this latter beginning from the pioneering work of Harwood et al. [9] up to more recent advances in this scientific field [10-12], The main interest of these techniques lays in the fact that optical probes are easily available on the market, so that qualitative monitoring of mixers is possible at an industrial scale. However, these probes only provide local information of the mixture (typically 1/40 of a tablet), so that in essence, they still sample the powder flow in a way that may be intrusive and not always representative of the overall stream.
