Associating batch inputs with product output can be difficult for continuous operations. The FDA frowns on blending batches. One approach is to operate as semicontinuous processes the material from continuous processing may be collected in a holding vessel for subsequent isolation and drying as a discrete batch. 

Herbal medicines with constituents of known therapeutic activity are often standardized (i.e. adjusted to a defined content of such constituents). The methods used to achieve such standardization should be documented. If another substance is added for these purposes, it is necessary to specify, as a range, the quantity that may be added. Blending different batches of a specific herbal material (e.g. before extraction) or by mixing different lots of similar herbal preparations may also be acceptable. Records should be maintained to ensure traceability. The blending process should be adequately controlled and documented and the blended batch should be tested for conformity with established specifications where appropriate. 

The expiry date of the blended batch should be chosen according to the date of manufacture of the oldest batch in the blend. 

Standardized extracts" are herbal preparations adjusted within an acceptable tolerance to a given content of constituents with known therapeutic activity standardization is achieved by adjustment of the herbal preparations with inert material or by blending batches of herbal preparations. "Quantified extracts" are herbal preparations adjusted to a defined range of constituents adjustments are made by blending batches of herbal preparations. "Other extracts" are herbal preparations essentially defined by their production process and their specifications. 

Where physical attributes of the API are critical (e.g., APIs intended tor use in solid oral dosage forms or suspensions), blending operations should be validated to show homogeneity of the blended batch. Validation should include testing for critical attributes (e.g., particle size distribution, bulk, and tap density) that may be affected by the blending process. 

Blending is a process somewhat unique to the manufacture of APIs. It is an accepted practice to blend batches of the final API as long as each of the individual batches meets the predetermined specifications prior to the blending. After the blending is complete, there must be a final test to assure that the final blended lot is acceptable as well.

Blending Batch. A batch charged to a glass furnace during a changeover in composition of the finished glass. It has a composition intermediate between that of the glass already in the furnace and that finally required. 

Most manufacturing equipment should be made of stainless steel. The liming tanks, however, can be either concrete or wood (qv). Properly lined iron tanks are often used for the washing and acidification, ie, souring, operations. Most gelatin plants achieve efficient processes by operating around the clock. The product is tested in batches and again as blends to confirm conformance to customer specifications. 

To produce highly purified phosphatidylcholine there are two industrial processes batch and continuous. In the batch process for producing phosphatidylcholine fractions with 70—96% PC (Pig. 4) (14,15) deoiled lecithin is blended at 30°C with 30 wt % ethanol, 90 vol %, eventually in the presence of a solubiHzer (for example, mono-, di-, or triglycerides). The ethanol-insoluble fraction is separated and dried. The ethanol-soluble fraction is mixed with aluminum oxide 1 1 and stirred for approximately one hour. After separation, the phosphatidylcholine fraction is concentrated, dried, and packed. 

Preceded by a blending operatiou and pasteurization, the iugredients are mixed iu a freezer that whips the mix to iucorporate air and freezes a portion of the water. Freezers may be of a batch or contiuuous type. Commercial ice cream is produced mosdy iu coutiuuous operatiou. 

Pastes. For blending of viscous pastes, mixers are classified as batch or continuous. Most convection-type mixers for dry soHds are also used for thick pastes.
