Leaf, black

Don t confuse this bacterial disease with sooty mold, a relatively harmless, black leaf fungus that rubs off easily. Fireblight bacteria enter the tree at the growing tips. They may travel down toward the roots and kill the whole tree. [Pg.329]

DETAILS - Nicotine is well Imown as the alkaloid extracted f rom tobacco, where it exists in a proportion of 2% to 8%, by weight. It is soluble in water and alcohol. Nicotine is very useful as a projectile poison due to its sticky nature. It works well by itself or as a binder for powdered poisons. It is available commercially in some parts of the country, notably the South, where it is used as an insecticide. The most common form is the sulfate (Black Leaf 40), but the free base is also available. It sometimes requires some search-... [Pg.107]

Most recently, there have been incidents in the USA where food has been intentionally contaminated with chemical insecticides. Not surprisingly, children were affected in these incidents. One incident occurred in 1998, where a restaurant s salt supply was contaminated with methomyl, a carbamate insecticide. It was reported that five children became ill after eating the insecticide-contaminated food (Buchholz et al, 2002). In another incident that occurred in 2003, approximately 200 pounds of ground beef were contaminated at a grocery store in Michigan with an insecticide called Black Leaf 40. Approximately 90 people (age range 1-76 years) became ill after ingesting the contaminated beef... [Pg.921]

Plant in partial shade, such as that found under deciduous trees, in moist, well-drained, neutral soil rich in organic matter. Maintain even soil moisture with a summer mulch. Then mix it with an equal amount of DMSO. You now have two ounces of liquid, a good squirt of which is guaranteed to kiU in three minutes. [Pg.5]

The cheapest and most convenient poison, however, is simple nicotine. It can be gotten in the form of Black Leaf 40, an insecticide. It is sold for about. 00 for 2 oz. of 40% pure nicotine in most garden sections of supermarkets or in plant nurseries. It... [Pg.90]

USE Insecticide fumigant. In the U.S. a 40% soln of nicotine sulfate, Black Leaf 40, was the commonly used form. As a contact poison it is most effective as soap, Le., as the laurate, oleate, or naphthenate. As a stomach poison a combination with bentonite has come into use. Caution Highly toxic. Symptoms indude extreme nausea, vomiting, evacuation of bowel and bladder, mental confusion, twitching, convulsions. Base is readily absorbed through mucous membranes and intact skin, but the salts are not. Treatment must be instituted quickly in order to be effective. See Clinical Toxicology of Commercial Products, R. E. Gosselin et at, Eds, (Williams Wilkins, Baltimore. 4th ed.. 1976) pp 246-249. [Pg.1030]

A potassium deficiency can cause leaf-scorch flavescence and premature leaf-drop—and in consequence a decrease in grape sugar and phenolic compound concentrations. Black leaf, encouraged by overproduction and soil dryness, often accompanies potassium deficiencies. [Pg.283]
