Black henbane

Other plants of the nightshade family, including Atropa belladonna (deadly nightshade), Hyoscyamus niger (black henbane), and Datura stramonium (Jimson weed), contain atropine-like toxins that are anticholinergic, blocking the muscarinic receptors. An incidence in southern Utah of cattle poisoned on black henbane, with many death losses, was recently reported (Pfister, 2003). Atropine and atropine-like alkaloids are discussed Section 2.2.1.7. [Pg.34]

Henbane has from 12-15 species, mostly native to the Mediterranean. Black henbane is the one that is used mainly for drags, its principal alkaloid beit hyoscy-amine. It is a small annual or perennial with hairy, coarsely lobed leaves with an unpleasant odor. It is used as a pain reliever for spasms and as a sedative. Henbane is also sometimes used as an antidote to meicuiy poisoning and in the treatment of morphine addiction. [Pg.555]

The alkaloid content of the seeds is less than that of the leaves. Egyptian henbane (Hyoscyamus muticus L, Soianaceae) contains about 0.5% alkaloids. Habit.
