While Stephan Hales devised techniques of pneumatic chemistry to separate airs from their sources, he did not explore their differences in great detail However, in 1756, in a continuation of his M D thesis (1754), Dr Joseph Black (1728-1799) described the generation of an air that had been fixed in magnesium alba (MgC03) and released upon heating Moreover, he tested this fixed air and found that its properties were very different from those of every- [Pg.271]

Traces the origins of ritual magic in the West, and its perilous coexistence with witchcraft, black magic and orthodox religion in the days when alchemy, astrology, and the Kabalah formed a powerful undercurrent in the whole intellectual life of Western Europe"... [Pg.506]

The inhabitants of Green Knowe become involved with black magic when a modern-day witch attempts to find books of witchcraft supposedly hidden in the old house by a mad seventeenth-century alchemist... [Pg.695]

Although a carrier is often the major constituent of a catalyst pellet, one often finds that there are materials that are added in small amounts during catalyst preparation in order to impart improved characteristics to the finished catalyst. These materials are referred to as promoters. They may lead to better activity, selectivity, or stability. The manner in which promoters act is not well understood, although a number of plausible explanations have been set forth. They remain one of the reasons for the black magic aura of catalysis. [Pg.201]

Software development continues to be, as always, a difficult and fascinating mixture of art, science, black magic, engineering, and hype. Major advancements have been proposed in the past, and not all of them have delivered what was promised. Object technology, open distributed systems, component technology, and rapid iterative development are all current approaches. Catalysis defines an approach that covers all of them. [Pg.28]

An inhibitor is a substance that retards a reaction. An inhibitor is also present in "catalytic" or sub-stoichiometric amounts. In a radical chain reaction an inhibitor may be a radical scavenger that interrupts the chain. In a metal catalysed reaction an inhibitor could be a substance that adsorbs onto the metal making it less active or blocking the site for substrate co-ordination. We also talk about a poison, a substance that stops the catalytic reaction. A poison may kill the catalyst. The catalyst dies, we say, after which it has to be regenerated wherever possible. We will often see the word co-catalyst, a substance that forms part of the catalyst itself or plays another role somewhere in the catalytic cycle. We inherited a florid language from our predecessors to whom catalysis was black magic. Naturally, these words are rather imprecise for a description of catalysis at the molecular level. [Pg.2]

As a former novice Balsamo was thus well versed in the Christian rituals essential to combating treasure demons. Equally important, he d acquired a considerable reputation as a sorcerer able to manipulate occult forces. Everyone knew that Christian and diabolical spirits competed with each other a successful treasure hunter had to understand both white and black magic. The genies of the underworld figured as an active and animate presence in the everyday life of every Palermitan. The landscape rustled with them. [Pg.19]

Fedele rose, tall and stark. That was why. Giovanni had made his last confession and I could not allow him to taint his soul by contact with black magic. I do urge you to repent your ways, Filippo. Eternity is a long time to bum. He raised his hand to bless. [Pg.63]

The emperor Constantine paves the way for Christianity to become the official religion of the Roman Empire black magic is outlawed but white magic is tolerated. [Pg.122]

Applications of scientific principles have resulted in removing the black magic that characterized the early applications of solid propellants. In 25 years of existence, solid composite propellants have become a major industrial product. The achievements of the solid propellant scientists give a real feeling of confidence in the use of this product when designed and developed by a competent and experienced scientific team. Exciting new advances in the state-of-the-art will be built on the sound foundation that has been established. [Pg.90]

Variation is present everywhere. But this is no reason to throw our hands up and say that no conclusions are possible, or, worse yet, to resort to black magic and preconceived notions as to the conclusions which should be drawn from the data. As we will see, some conclusions can always be drawn and the probability of their being correct can be calculated. Every effort should be made to classify error into the four categories listed above. Then we have 1 it where we want it. We can classify, quantify, and modify error, so that instead of clouding the issue it can lead us to more definite conclusions. [Pg.8]

A modest perusal of the literature that may be pertinent to the topic of trace analysis can easily convince the reader that this is a field reserved to witchcraft and black magic. It would appear also to be reserved to those who have inordinate amounts of time on their hands. In part this is most certainly due to the nature of trace analysis since it clearly involves seeking the proverbial "needle in the haystack." However, in this case not only are all the sought needles different, each of the haystacks is also different. Thus, it tends to imply that for each specific problem of trace analysis brought to the analytical laboratory, a specific procedure must be developed or employed. This particular circumstance is not precisely stated by the individual contributor to the literature. It requires an overview of many of these contributions to derive that conclusion. [Pg.366]
