Birth control spermicide

Few, if any, products are administered via the vagina that are intended for systemic absorption. Thus, this route has not been as widely studied and characterized as others. On the other hand, large numbers of different products (douches, spermicides, antiyeast agents, etc.) have been developed that require introduction into the vagina in order to assert their localized effects. Increased research into different birth control and antiviral prophylaxis will result in more vaginal products in the future. All these must be assessed for vaginal irritation potential, and this serves as an example of the other tissue tolerance issues. 

Birth control may also involve a spermicide, such as the nonoxynol-9 shown in Table 14.3. When used in conjunction with a barrier device, such as a condom or a cervical diaphragm, spermicides can be close to 95 percent effective at preventing pregnancy.

Management strategies depend on predisposing factors, number of episodes per year, and patient s preference. Factors that have been associated commonly with recurrent infections inclnde sexual intercourse and diaphragm or spermicide nse for birth control. Therapeutic options include self-administered therapy, postcoital therapy, and continuous low-dose prophylaxis. In patients with infrequent infections (less than three infections per year), each episode should be treated as a separately occurring infection. Short-course therapy is appropriate in this setting. Many women have been treated successfully with self-administered short-course therapy at the onset of symptoms. ...
