The oil companies by themselves have not invested much on biotechnology development. However, there are exceptions ... 

Biopharmaceutical companies are highly diverse not only in their products but also in their size, capabilities, and approaches to development. Some biopharmaceutical companies (especially small companies) outsource part or most of the analytical work, some outsource manufacture and filling, and some invest and develop expertise to do everything in their own facilities. Most biotechnology companies are small, and sometimes it is faster and more cost-effective to outsource a task that requires expertise or expensive pieces of laboratory equipment not available in the company. There are still a number of imponderables, such as the sustainability of the current high prices of conventional feedstock, and the availability of competitively-priced bio feedstock. However, it would certainly seem advisable for all incumbents to be investing in some biotechnology intelligence, if only to understand the developments. Alliances with companies with biotech expertise might also be wise. If biotechnology has the potential to become an 800-pound gorilla, say, five years down the track, it may be best to treat it with respect and courtesy now. 

Unlike the pharmaceutical Industry, food processing Industries tend to be market driven rather that technology driven ( 7 ) and Is much more receptive to trends such as the demand for natural flavors. It Is anticipated that there will be more Investment In biotechnological flavor development especially as the technology proves Itself and that existing technology needs can be satisfied by these new approaches.
