Development biotechnology companies

The Health Sector (Food, Agriculture, and Pharmacy industries) has received the greatest impact of biotechnologies both, social and economical. Therefore, the chemical applications of biology to this sector have deeply contributed to that consolidation, leading the development of biotechnologies to a mature state. A list of biotechnological companies, exclusively associated to the Food and Pharmacy industries is included in Table 1. Those companies are not analyzed in this book and are only included for completeness purposes and to prevent the oil reader of useless search.

ChemGenes Corporation has developed its expertise in the field of DNA/RNA synthesis. Both, the reagent products and the specialized custom services are provided, either as services or as a research contractor. 

Avecia is a biotechnology company directed to the development and manufacturing of biotechnology based medicines. It is structurally organized in two business units, namely Biologies and DNA Medicines. Its capabilities comprise process development, scale-up, and manufacture of microbial-derived biopharmaceuticals and oligonucleotides. 

The P. patens system is being developed by the German biotechnology company Greenovation Biotech GmbH, which is based in Freiburg. The company has developed transient expression systems that allow feasibility studies, and stable production strains that can be scaled up to several thousand liters. 

Biopharmaceutical companies are highly diverse not only in their products but also in their size, capabilities, and approaches to development. Some biopharmaceutical companies (especially small companies) outsource part or most of the analytical work, some outsource manufacture and filling, and some invest and develop expertise to do everything in their own facilities. Most biotechnology companies are small, and sometimes it is faster and more cost-effective to outsource a task that requires expertise or expensive pieces of laboratory equipment not available in the company. The results with ob/ob mice stimulated enormous interest in the potential use of leptin for the treatment of hnman obesity. Amgen, a prominent biotechnology company, gained the rights to develop leptin for hnman use. hi fact, it is known that hnman mutations leading to leptin deficiency are associated with massive obesity in hnmans. However, these mntations are very rare and acconnt for a minute part of the human obesity problem.
