The evaluation of new video endoscopic equipment is also difficult because of the lack of objective standards for performance. Purchasers of equipment are forced to make an essentially subjective decision about image quality. By employing virtual instrumentation, a collaborative team of biomedical engineers, software engineers, physicians, nurses, and technicians at Hartford Hospital (Hartford, CT) and Premise Development Corporation (Avon, CT) have developed an instrument, the EndoTester , with integrated software to quantify the optical properties of both rigid and flexible fiberoptic endoscopes. This easy-to-use optical evaluation system allows objective measurement of endoscopic performance prior to equipment purchase and in routine clinical use as part of a program of prospective maintenance. 

The purpose of the Telehealth and Mobile Health handbook is to provide a reference that is both concise and useful for biomedical engineers in universities and medical device industries, scientists, designers, managers, research personnel, and students, as well as healthcare persoimel, such as physicians, nurses, and technicians, who use technology over a distance. The handbook covers an extensive range of topics that comprise the subject of distance communication, from sensors on and within the body to electronic medical records. It serves the reference needs of a broad group of users— from advanced high school science students to healthcare and university professionals. 

The CMBES Clinical Engineering Standards of Practice was published in 1998. These guidelines outline criteria for health care institutions on the management of medical devices, promote the professional development of its members, and outline the education and certification requirements for clinical engineers and biomedical engineering technologists and technicians. 

The Danish Society for Biomedical Engineering (DMTS) is an association of engineers, physicians, and technicians from research, education and health institutions who, together with colleagues from industry, join in a common interest to utilize and develop biomedical technology. 

Certification Program. Our society presently initiated three certification programs, including clinical engineer, biomedical engineer, and medical equipment technician in 2004. The certification programs aims to consolidate better services, quality, safety issues, and developments of medical devices of healthcare in hospitals and industrials.

Biomedical Research. Veterinarians in charge of laboratory animals are responsible for the health and well-being of the animals used in the laboratory. They may oversee as many as 70,000 such animals, many of which are genetically engineered mice. They supervise teams of veterinary technicians and other trained personnel who take care of these animals on a daily basis. They also assess proposed experiments and evaluate how well they conform to regulations regarding laboratory animals.
