1 Protein extraction and bubble production in agarose eels [Pg.75]

The proteinaceous (ref. 231) surfactants surrounding and stabilizing long-lived gas microbubbles, present in both carbohydrate (agarose) gels and forest soil extracts, have been successfully isolated from both of these natural sources. The isolation was first [Pg.75]

2 Amino acid composition of microbubble elvcopeptide surfactant [Pg.76]

The isolated proteinaceous surfactants, obtained from commercial agarose powder and forest soil extract, were found to have extremely similar total amino acid compositions. Table 4.2 summarizes the amino acid values obtained from four determinations for each of the two surfactant preparations it can be seen that the rather unusual amino acid ratios obtained (among 17 different amino acids) for the two separate cases closely resemble one another. Specifically, in both of these cases the relative amounts of the different amino acids identified (excluding tryptophan which is completely destroyed during acid hydrolysis) were as follows glycine serine aspartic acid (and/or aspara- [Pg.76]

The specific binding of taste-stimulus compounds, and correlations between the biochemical results obtained and the behavioral responses, have also been studied (see Fig. 39). Direct measurement of the binding of... [Pg.329]

Biochemical results (A", in nM) obtained in binding assays of radioactively labeled brain receptors [57] from the same 17 neuroleptics shown in Table 37.9. [Pg.414]

Within the nucleosome, addition of ubiquitin to H2A occurs near the entry and exit sites of DNA and the binding site of HI [203]. Therefore, this post-translational modification is expected to have implications for both the stability of the particle and higher order structure of chromatin [45,203]. The C-terminal end of H2B and its ubiquitination site on the other hand is located at the opposite side of the nucleosome [45]. Incorporation of an ubiquitin adduct into the nucleosome at this site may have significant implications for the trajectory of the DNA and the integrity of the particle. In this regard there have been multiple biochemical results substantiating a role of H2B ubiquitination in transcriptional activation [207-210]. [Pg.257]

Etodolac contains one chiral center and is resolved into two enantiomers. The pharmacologic and biochemical results generated with racemic etodolac and its optically pure enantiomers showed that most of the antiinflammatory activity is due to the (+) enantiomer [10]. [Pg.111]

The first structural location of the taxane binding site [42] placed it in the interprotofilament space, thus supporting the biochemical results. However, this changed when the first high resolution 3D structure of the paclitaxel-tubulin complex was solved by electron-crystallography of a two-dimensional zinc-induced tubulin polymer [5]. The fitting of this structure into a three-dimensional reconstruction of microtubules from cryoelectron microscopy allowed a pseudo atomic resolution model of microtubules [43] in which the paclitaxel binding site was placed inside the lumen of the microtubules hidden from the outer solvent. [Pg.72]

Chloe s medical notes show that as an infant she was admitted to the children s hospital with suspected celiac disease (gluten-sensitive enteropathy). On discharge, she was prescribed a special diet for four years. Her paediatrician then suggested the gradual introduction of foods previously excluded from her diet, such as bread and breakfast cereals. Since then she has gained weight normally and remained fairly well, except for occasional anaemia. Her blood test now shows microcytic red blood cells some of her biochemical results are shown below. [Pg.92]

In conclusion, the combination of structural and biochemical results using enzyme from a variety of sources is beginning to coalesce around a unified mechanism for the critical and complex transformation of glucose 6-phosphate to MIP catalyzed by MIP synthase. [Pg.177]

The above limitations in sensitivity and specificity of biochemical tests are compounded by the large numbers of patients commonly tested for pheochromocytomas, very few of whom have the tumor. The low pretest prevalence of pheochromocytomas means that false-positive biochemical results usually far outnumber true-positive results, making it difficult to unequivocally confirm the tumor in the vast majority of patients with positive results. [Pg.1047]

The clinical presentation of the patient is also important to consider when interpreting patterns of biochemical results. Patients with tumors that produce large amounts of epinephrine (and also metanephrine) may present with hyperglycemia, dyspnea, and pulmonary edema, signs and... [Pg.1048]

General Biochemical Results and Liver Function Tests... [Pg.106]

Most of the general biochemical results are within normal limits. The blood urea is also normal, except in subjects on a low protein diet, when it is decreased. The blood pH is frequently near the upper limit of normal, and sometimes even above it. Although some liver function tests are normal, the serum GOT, GPT, and the LDH are raised, sometimes markedly, especially when a normal protein diet is taken. The alkaline phosphatase is also usually raised. [Pg.116]

The serum constituents were determined, using either AutoAnalyser or work-simplified manual methods. While blood specimens were being prepared for analysis, three punched cards were automatically reproduced for each patient from the punched card delivered from the registration department the previous evening. Each of two cards had space for the entry of eight biochemical results and the third card had space for the coded answers to questions which the clinicians were asked to answer on receipt of a duplicate report form. [Pg.392]

After the profile results, three patients were referred to hospital two were known to have diabetes or renal disease, but the biochemical results disclosed an unsuspected deterioration in their condition, and the third patient required inpatient treatment for renal failure. As a result of tests performed subsequent to the profile, a further two patients were referred to hospital, one, already mentioned, for hemorrhoidectomy and the other, a subject with back pain and a previous colectomy for carcinoma, for reassessment when found to have a persistently raised serum calcium. [Pg.401]

We should mention an interesting study of ATP synthesis and Na transport in the rat kidney [8], which led to the conclusion that the Na /ATP stoichiometry of the transport ATPase is 12, rather than 3 - the value observed in erythrocytes. This study is one of the few examples in which in vivo NMR methods have yielded a novel biochemical result. [Pg.37]

Each biochemistry test request should be thought of as a question about the patient each biochemical result as an answer. [Pg.7]
