The high shear stress around an agitation impeller is not acceptable for cell cultures or other sensitive materials in stirred (bio) reactors (Kato et. al., 2003 Michell et al., 1999). In these cases in which the solid phase is sensitive to high shear stress, shaking vessels can be used. The main types are the reciprocally and rotational shaking vessels. For these cases, see Kato et al. (2003). [Pg.101]

Except for a few cases among all the systems described in the literature, all the solid/gas bio reactors are continuous (packed-bed type) and can be divided in two main categories based on the technique used for controlling the thermodynamic activity of the compounds present in the inlet gas. [Pg.258]

All scientists agree that chemistry is the basis of life and with that preamble it seems almost certain that the first cells one sees in the Hadean stones are the first ones on earth their ancestors were the heat- and light-driven bio-reactors. The Darwinians see the same cells but because the (in principle unprovable) single origin is a creed of the model, they postulate that a single ancestor must have lived much earlier and mutated into all of the cells that are visible at this horizon. At this point the old hypothesis is defeated by the researchers in planetary sciences who do not see any biology-time before the time of the first massive invasion of the earth crust by cells. The hell fire of global accretion was too close for descent with variation . [Pg.15]

With many liter-size bio-reactors the planet would still have looked arid to alien visitors. The Genomic Potential Hypothesis will have all of them make proteins in essentially the same way because it is the only way for making proteins efficiently and repeatedly and to remember forever how it was done. If other routes were possible we would see them today, just like we see differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic genome organization. Versatile as it is, chemistry is not resourceful enough to provide two independent pathways to life. [Pg.70]

Additionally, membranes have the unique advantage of allowing the simultaneous contact with two different media, at each membrane side, creating compartments with different properties. Therefore, membranes offer the potential to promote the spatial organization of catalytic compartments and selective barriers. This feature is used with advantage in new concepts of membrane multiphasic (bio)reactors and membrane contactors. [Pg.246]

The effect of shear stress on the pigment content, i.e., its specific production, of the Perilla frutescens cells in the reactor is shown in Figs. 3 A and 3B. The anthocyanin content was relatively high at an average shear rate below 30 s 1 or an impeller tip speed below 8 dm s-1. At higher shear rates, the pigment content of the cultured cells showed an obvious decrease. The effects of shear on the total production and the volumetric productivity of anthocyanin in the bio-reactor were also similar (data not shown). The pigment production and pro-... [Pg.11]

Alternatively, some subunit viral vaccines can be generated by rDNA techniques and expressed in a continuous cell line or insect cells. Recent advances in bio reactor design and operation have improved the successful production of IPV in large-scale bioreactors. However, roller bottles or flasks are still used for most current vaccine production. Development of insect cell culture will allow for very large-scale liquid suspension culture (143). Several vaccine candidates such as gpl60 for HIV and gD protein for herpes have been demonstrated in the insect cell culture system. However, no vaccine has... [Pg.361]

The bio-reactor construction must cover the area (presumably of water, since land use would entail the higher land costs) from which solar radiation is to be collected and must, from a closed construction capable of keeping the hydrogen produced from escaping, pipe it to the shore. The cost can therefore be expected to be similar to that of thermal solar collectors. It follows from the discussion in Chapter 2 that the efficiency defined as the energy value of the hydrogen produced divided by the incoming solar radiation on the reactor surface will be considerably below 1%. Table 6.2 assumes for illustration an efficiency of 0.1% and estimates cost on the basis of the similarity to solar collectors. [Pg.365]

The development of processes to reduce environmental load is also discussed. Examples include lower-energy processes for isobutylene and polypropylene, the use of bio-reactors in a mercury-free process for a dyestuff intermediate, direct oxidation of MMA and a hydroperoxide process for the manufacture of resorcinol. [Pg.330]

As a change to another CMO will take about three years (as post-approval change), it is important to select a CMO which will not only supply the material for clinical Phase III but is willing to dehver product for the initial three years of marketing requirements. Typically, that will require scale-up of the process to larger bio-reactor(s) and purification unit operations. [Pg.1096]

Batch bio reactors—This is the simplest bioreactor process. In this mode, all nutrients needed for cell growth are formulated into the basal medium and added to the production reactor with the cell inoculum at the initiation of the run. The cells grow for a finite period and are harvested after the nutrients become limited and the cell viability decreases to a predetermined level. Although simple to operate, batch mode is least likely to be used as other modes of operation yield higher product titers. [Pg.438]
