Alloys. Many Ge alloys have been prepared and studied. Most have been made by melting Ge with another metal, much as germanides are made. Collections of binary phase diagrams and comments about many Ge alloys are available (25—28). [Pg.278]

Binary Alloys. Aluminum-rich binary phase diagrams show tliree types of reaction between liquid alloy, aluminum solid solution, and otlier phases eutectic, peritectic, and monotectic. The general thermodynamic treatment of binary systems which involve the incorporation of an electroactive species into a solid alloy electrode under the assumption of complete equilibrium was presented by Weppner and Huggins [19-21], Under these conditions the Gibbs Phase Rule specifies that the electrochemical potential varies with composition in the single-phase regions of a binary phase diagram, and is composition-independent in two-phase regions if the temperature and total pressure are kept constant. [Pg.363]

Although fractional crystallization has always been the most common method for the separation of diastereomers. When it can be used, binary-phase diagrams for the diastereomeric salts have been used to calculate the efficiency of optical resolution. However, its tediousness and the fact that it is limited to solids prompted a search for other methods. Data for the hydrogen sulfide-water and the methane-n-hexane binary systems were considered. The first is a type III system in the binary phase diagram classification scheme of van Konynenburg and Scott. Experimental data from Selleck et al. (1952) were used. This work raises some interesting issues. The first is that the stoichiometry of a complex is not necessarily the most obvious. For example, it was reported initially that phthalic acid formed a 2 1 complex with alkoxystil-bazole [34], when in fact a careful study carried out by constructing a binary phase diagram (Fig. 11) revealed the complex to have a 1 1 ratio of the two components [35]. The reluctance of the system to form the more obvious 2 1 complex may relate to the presence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding or could even relate to the change in the pfCa of the second acid proton on com-plexation. [Pg.182]
