If the rat experiences respiratory problems during recovery, doxapram hydrochloride is administered (Dopram-V 0.10 cc, i.p. Ayerst Laboratories). Two days following surgery, the patency of each cannula is checked and betadine is applied to the surgical wound (10% Povidone-iodine Purdue Frederick). [Pg.242]

Burned areas must be cleansed with sterile sahne solutions and an antiseptic such as povidone-iodine (Betadine). Broad-spectmm topical antibiotics are then appMed to burn areas. These include antibacterials such as mafenide acetate... [Pg.405]

Indwelling catheter kits come prepackaged with povidone iodine (Betadine) to use for cleansing the perineal skin before inserting the catheter. The nurse should assess for allergies to the medication before preparing to cleanse the perineum. Another type of skin cleanser may need to be used. [Pg.184]

The standard surgical scrub is a povidone-iodine (Betadine) antiseptic skin preparation. This should be brought to the attention of the surgical nurse who will be preparing the surgical site so that a substitute can be used. [Pg.209]

Povidone-iodine (Betadine) is a water-soluble iodine complex which retains the broad-range microbiocidal activity of iodine without the undesirable effects of iodine tincture. However, toxicity still occurs from povidone-iodine percutaneously absorbed, mainly when it is used on large areas of burnt skin or on neonates. This subject is comprehensively dealt with by Postellon and Aronow (1990). [Pg.46]

Povidone-iodine (PVP-I, polyvinyl pyrrolidon-iodine complex, Betadine, Betaisodona, Braunol, Braunosan H, Disadine D.P., Disphex, Efo-Dine, Inadine, Isodine, Proviodine, Traumasept, Videne, CAS no. 25655-41-8). This is the most widely used iodophor and does not have the irritant properties associated with iodine solutions. At a strength of 7.5% in a surfactant base, povidone-iodine is applied as a surgical scrub, and at 4% is used as a shampoo or skin cleanser. Because of the small amounts of free iodine (less then 1 ppm in a 10% solution), antimicrobial effects are moderate in comparison with iodine solutions. [Pg.468]

A slaughterhouse worker developed allergic contact dermatitis on the hands after contact with povidone iodine used to disinfect cuts. A patch test with 10% povidone-iodine solution (Betadine) was positive, and a use test was also positive (Lachapelle 1984). [Pg.850]

About 33% of women with vaginal deliveries undergo an episiotomy, and it is the most common perineal incision in obstetrics and midwifery. Wound care usually involves regular antiseptic sitz baths using aqueous solutions of povidone-iodine (Betadine). However, this substance has been demonstrated to impair wound healing and to suppress the function of lymphocytes and broblasts (Cooper et al 1991). [Pg.407]
