Methyl benzenes

Solvent Treatment. Solvent processes can be divided into two main categories, solvent extraction and solvent dewaxing. The solvent used in the extraction processes include propane and cresyHc acid, 2,2 -dichlorodiethyl ether, phenol (qv), furfural, sulfur dioxide, benzene, and nitrobenzene. In the dewaxing process (28), the principal solvents are benzene, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, propane, petroleum naphtha, ethylene dichloride, methylene chloride, sulfur dioxide, and iV-methylpyrroHdinone. [Pg.208]

The laboratory you work in has benzene, methyl ethyl ketone, trichloroethane (TCA), and acetone as general purpose solvents. Rank these in order of their risk for fire. State the reasons why one is more dangerous from another in terms of fire safety. [Pg.186]

Obviously, accurate concentrations of other gases or vapors cannot be indicated unless the instrument has been appropriately calibrated for each of these gases. Furthermore, the manufacturer s calibration may not be sufficiently accurate and a correction may be required. For example, a meter reading of 2.0 on the 0 to 10% LEL scale of one instrument would indicate, for a solvent having an LEL of 1.4 %, a concentration of 280 ppm (0.02 x 14,000 ppm). Benzene, methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK). For example, a meter reading of 2.0 on the O-to-10% LEL scale of one instrument would indicate, for a solvent having an LEL of 1.4%, a concentration of 280 ppm (0.02 x 14,000 ppm). Benzene, methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) and toluene all have LEL s of 1.4%, but actual concentrations at a meter... [Pg.271]

Similarly to quantitative determination of high surfactant concentrations, many alternative methods have been proposed for the quantitative determination of low surfactant concentrations. Tsuji et al. [270] developed a potentio-metric method for the microdetermination of anionic surfactants that was applied to the analysis of 5-100 ppm of sodium dodecyl sulfate and 1-10 ppm of sodium dodecyl ether (2.9 EO) sulfate. This method is based on the inhibitory effect of anionic surfactants on the enzyme system cholinesterase-butyryl-thiocholine iodide. A constant current is applied across two platinum plate electrodes immersed in a solution containing butyrylthiocholine and surfactant. Since cholinesterase produces enzymatic hydrolysis of the substrate, the decrease in the initial velocity of the hydrolysis caused by the surfactant corresponds to its concentration. Amounts up to 60 pg of alcohol sulfate can be spectrometrically determined with acridine orange by extraction of the ion pair with a mixture 3 1 (v/v) of benzene/methyl isobutyl ketone [271]. [Pg.282]

However, a reinvestigation of the deuteration and methylation reaction using (tert-butyl-sulfinylmethyl)benzene gave a different result49,50. In this case, and in contrast with (methyl-sulfinylmethyl)benzene, methylation and deuteration occurred with the same stereochemistry, both with retention of configuration. [Pg.1059]

A further aid in the location of the solvents and their exact specification is the Chemical Abstracts (CAS) Registry Number, shown in the second column. The Chemical Abstracts name may be the same as the commonly used one or may differ from it considerably, so that it is not always easy to find the solvents in these Chemical Substance Indexes of the Chemical Abstracts. Eor instance, benzene, methyl is a fairly transparent name for toluene, and methanol, phenyl a slightly less one for benzyl alcohol, but one has to become familiar with the systematics of Chemical Abstracts nomenclature in order to search for diethyl ether or any other more complicated compound. It is expected that with all this information available in table Al the solvents listed are definitely specified and readily found in the Abstracts and other compilation of information and data. [Pg.130]

Rubber A maferial fhaf is capable of recovering from large deformations quickly and forcibly and can be, or already is, modified fo a sfafe in which if is essentially insoluble (but can swell) in boiling solvent such as benzene, methyl ethyl ketone, and ethanol-toluene azeotrope. A rubber in its modified state, free of diluents, retracts within 1 min to less than 1.5 times of its original length after being stretched at room temperature to twice its length and held for 1 min before release. [Pg.258]

Exercise 22-11 Why do fairly reactive arenes, such as benzene, methyl benzene, and ethylbenzene, react with excess nitric acid in nitromethane solution at a rate that is independent of the concentration of the arene (i.e., zero order in arene concentration) Does this lack of dependence on arene concentration mean that nitration of an equimolar mixture of benzene and methylbenzene would necessarily give an equimolar mixture of nitrobenzene and nitromethy I benzenes Why or why not ... [Pg.1044]

Waste waters in the production of silicone monomers and polymers is an important economic issue. It is connected with environmental protection from air contamination and pollution of rivers, seas and other water bodies. Especially important in silicone production is the purification of acid waste waters from organic impurities (toluene, benzene, methyl alcohol, etc.). [Pg.360]

A series of methyl derivatives of benzene has been studied by the method of spectral analysis in the UV region. The position of an absorption band for n-o-complexes of alkyl-benzenes with iodine as an electron acceptor has been determined.
