Bell Telephone Company

The researchers quickly made a few of these transistors and connected them with some other components to make an audio amplifier. Showing this audio amplifier to executives at Bell Telephone Company, who were very impressed that it didn t need time to warm up (like the heaters in vacuum tube circuits), they quickly realized the power of this new technology. It should be mentioned that the original motivation for this invention was to find a way to amphfy voices in telephones, a key product sold by the Bell Telephone Company—a goal that the inventors ably met. 

Hundreds of different kinds of whiskers were developed since they were discovered for the first time in 1948 by scientists from Bell Telephone Company in the United States. Doctor C. Cevans defined whiskers as a kind of fibrous single whiskers with uniform cross section, high-integrity internal structure, L/D range above 5-1000, and diameter from 20 nm to 100 gm. However, only whiskers with a diameter of 1-10 gm have particular performances. 

I was working at Bell Telephone Laboratories at that time. Much of the radar development came out of applied work in industrial laboratories, and so did microwave spectroscopy. I persuaded the Bell Laboratories to let me do microwave spectroscopy, and so it started at Bell Labs, but it also started at General Electric, where a friend of mine began it. He did a little bit of work, but then the General Electric people said, no, you must stop, it s not going to have any use for us, we have no applications. So this work had to stop at General Electric. At RCA, another important electrical company, a friend of mine started it there, and he worked on it for a while, and the company said, no, that s of no value to us, we won t pay you anything for it, you must stop. 

The report had a catalyzing effect. What had been a ho-hum field of research was now the scene of frenzied worldwide competition as the hunt for higher-temperature superconductors was on once again. Only this time the search had a narrower focus, the oxides. Among the first to jump into the race was Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), which provides research and technical support for the telephone companies formed in the breakup of the Bell System.

Fault tree analysis (FTA) was developed by Bell Telephone Laboratories for the U.S. Air Force in 1962 and has been used as one of the primary system safety techniques since the system safety effort began. The Boeing Company was also an early pioneer in the use of fault tree analysis. 

By the middle of the twentieth century, the industry had reached some degree of stability. The Bell System, the largest of the country s telephone companies, had managed to capture about 80 percent of the telephone service in the country. 

This type of cell is now gradually being replaced by a sealed ceU design, e.g. the Bell Telephone System and Western Electric Company Round Cell which contains saucer-shaped pure lead grids stacked horizontally. These cells have a life of about 30 years. Plantd type cells are still in use to some extent but... 

The Bell System survived a number of government-initiated lawsuits over the years, but in 1982, it agreed to split itself up into two m or entities, the telephone operating companies and the parent company, AT T, which brought with it the long-distance arm, manufacturing facility, and research and development units.
