Almost all of the directly measured thermochemical data for the sulfoxides, sulfones, sulfites and sulfates are due to the work of Busfield and Mackle and their coworkers at the University of Leeds and The Queens University, Belfast. This work involved measurement of enthalpies of combustion, fusion and vaporization. It is the basis of the subsequent compilations of Benson and coworkers , Cox and Pilcher and Pedley, Naylor and Kirby . The data given by the latter are used as the basic data set in the present work. Corrections and omissions are noted in the next section. Data on additional compounds were sought by searching the lUPAC Bulletin of Thermochemistry and Thermodynamics for the years 1980-1983 , and by searches of Chemical Abstracts.

Biocol A process for removing dyes from aqueous effluents using a microorganism immobilized on activated carbon. The microorganism, Schewanella putrifaciens, was first isolated and characterized at the University of Leeds. The process was developed in Queens University, Belfast, in conjunction with British Textile Technology Group. Piloted from April 2001 at a dyeworks in County Antrim.

R. C. Pink (Queens University, Belfast, Northern Ireland) Turkevich has said that only the D-H exchange reaction can, with certainty, be attributed to the Lewis acid activity. The cyclopropane isomerization reaction, however, seems to respond to both the Bronsted and the Lewis activity. NH4" Y zeolites activated at different temperatures show two temperature regions of activity, one corresponding closely to the Bronsted activity of the catalyst, the other at a much higher temperature ( — 650°) corresponding to the temperature at which the electron donor-acceptor properties are at a maximum.

Dr Martin Brennan is an analytical scientist of more than 30 years standing with considerable experience in atomic spectroscopy. He has a MSc in analytical science from Queens University, Belfast and a PhD in atomic spectroscopy and electroanalytical techniques from University College Cork, Ireland. He is the author and co-author of several published articles in atomic spectroscopy and electrochemical sciences. His research interests include trace analysis of difficult matrices and improvements in sample preparation techniques. He has considerable experience in the analysis of a wide range of samples particularly organic type samples and is currently employed in the Research and Development Department of Henkel (Ireland) Ltd, manufacturers of adhesives and other organic compounds. He holds the position of honorary secretary of the Republic of Ireland sub-region Analytical Division of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
