Behaviour studies

While the nigrostriatal pathways are ipsilateral some crossing occurs in fibres from the ventral tegmental AlO nucleus. These pathways are shown diagramatically in Fig. 7.1. Further details can be obtained from Moore and Bloom (1978) and Lindvall and Bjorkland (1978). The nuclei provide distinct loci for activating the dopamine systems for electrophysiological, release and behavioural studies and for their destruction by electrolytic lesion or injection of the toxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). [Pg.138]

Behavioural studies are generally unable to find a role for spinal NO in nociceptive reflexes in normal animals, whereas NO inhibitors are highly effective in blocking these same reflexes following the induction of peripheral inflammation or neuropathy. Although a complication is that NO may also play a role in peripheral vascular events during inflammation, these results do suggest that the gas is produced only under certain conditions. [Pg.284]

The 5-HT3 receptor is found appropriately in mesocortical areas and while behavioural studies with their antagonists in rodents showed potential antipsychotic activity, they have proved ineffective in patients. 5-HTia agonists may be more useful. They have been found to increase the extracellular concentration of DA in the frontal cortex of rats but diminish apomorphine-induced stereotypy (striatal effect). So they could be of some benefit, especially against negative symptoms, without causing EPSPs (see Chapter 9). [Pg.367]

Recently, compound CM 30366 (CAS 82239-52-9), the 4-hydroxyphenyl analogue of minaprine, also has been studied in some detail. Based on the results obtained in a behavioural study in mice and rats, it has been concluded that CM 30366 may be of potential therapeutic usefulness due to a significant atypical dopamine-like activity [159], Also thiophene isosters of minaprine have been claimed as antidepressant agents [131],... [Pg.12]

In 1976 Martin proposed the theory that there are three subtypes of opioid receptor on the basis of behavioural studies using a chronic spinal dog model which revealed that the opioids morphine (mu) (1), ketazocine (kappa) (2) and A-allylnormetazocine (SKF 10047) (4) (sigma) had different effects on respiration, heart rate and locomotor activity [13]. Furthermore, these ligands were unable to replace each other to prevent withdrawal symptoms in dogs that had been chronically treated with one of the compounds. [Pg.111]

Indications for several therapeutic uses of 5-HT3 receptor antagonists have come from behavioural studies. These compounds have little or no ef-... [Pg.245]

The early suggestion by Fozard [54] that 5-HT3 receptor antagonists may be useful in the treatment of migraine has yet to be established, although MDL 72222 appeared to be effective in limited clinical trials [94, 95]. There are exciting prospects for other clinical applications of 5-HT3 antagonists in psychiatric disorders which have been predicted from behavioural studies in rodents and primates, and several clinical trials are underway in psychiatric patients. [Pg.265]

Van Gelder We have increased it up to about 500 lux, where we find a few animals show entrainment where they didn t under dim light, but the majority of animals remain unresponsive. This is not the same level of light intensity that they are subjected to in the photic gene induction studies. We haven t taken the intensity up to this level yet in the behavioural studies. [Pg.43]

In order to obtain a thermodynamically stable micro emulsion, the analysis of the phase behaviour is indispensable. With bovine serum albumin instead of an enzyme (because of the cost of the bio-catalyst) phase behaviour studies are shown in Fig. 2. A strong shift of the phase boundary is observed, yielding a system that solubilises much less water in the presence of the protein. In case of hydrophobic enzymes, the addition of dry lyophilised protein to an already prepared reverse micellar solution can also work well [53]. [Pg.191]

The crystal and molecular structures of sodium l3-hydroxy-7-sulfonato-2-naphthoic add trihydrate and of l-hydroxy-4-sulfonato-2-naphthoic acid dihydrate have been determined, and their IR spectra and thermal behaviour studied.174 Each 3-hydroxy-7-sulfonato-2-naphthoic acid coordinates to two sodium ions through a bidentate sulfonate group and one oxygen atom of the carboxyl group, respectively. The other three sites in the coordination octahedron are occupied by water molecules. The l-hydroxy-4-sulfonato-2-naphthoic acid, as well as the bidentate sulfonate and monodentate carboxylate, also uses the oxygen atom of the hydroxyl group in coordinating the... [Pg.482]

Consumer behaviour, as a field of inquiry with its own journals, textbooks and courses, is centrally focused on the choices of products and the satisfaction with products (Bagozzi et ah, 2002 Schutte Carlante, 1998). In each phase of tourist behaviour outlined by Clawson and Knetsch, some differences from the standard consumer behaviour studies can be noted. In the first anticipation phase, many tourists plan for and fantasise about their forthcoming travel for months, sometimes years ahead. While this might be similar for the purchase of a motor vehicle, it is somewhat absurd when... [Pg.12]

Distance travelled to the destination is often used as a demographic descriptor. It addresses the effort of the tourist, is often allied to the expense involved and serves also to indicate familiarity with the product for firsttime visitors versus repeat visitors. Local, regional, intrastate and interstate visitors are frequently contrasted in tourist behaviour studies. The differences in visitors use of facilities such as visitor centres and their participation in activities is often markedly different for travellers arriving from near... [Pg.43]

The distinction between these forms of satisfaction is not trivial. It is central to tourist behaviour studies to emphasise that, along certain key dimensions, tourist behaviour is unlike other forms of consumer behaviour. This perspective was introduced in Chapter 1 but it is particularly appropriate to restate the distinction in satisfaction studies since models of consumer satisfaction are largely oriented toward instrumental attributes (Fuchs, 2002). This narrower focus has important implications when the conceptual models for understanding satisfaction are considered. [Pg.167]

Pearce and Yagi (2004) suggest that there are four particular sources of methodological innovation in tourism research, some of which can be applied directly to tourist behaviour study. The four sources of innovation derive from ... [Pg.199]
