Beasley studies

In going through mountains of documents, I found no evidence that the FDA ever saw the crucial Beasley study that confirmed FDA investigator Kapit s frequently expressed concerns about the drug s similarity to stimulants, including amphetamine (e.g., Kapit, 1986c). [Pg.385]

In experimental load studies, the measurable variables are often surface strain, acceleration, weight, pressure or temperature (Haugen, 1980). A discussion of the techniques on how to measure the different types of load parameters can be found in Figliola and Beasley (1995). The measurement of stress directly would be advantageous, you would assume, for use in subsequent calculations to predict reliability. However, no translation of the dimensional variability of the part could then be accounted for in the probabilistic model to give the stress distribution. A better test would be to output the load directly as shown and then use the appropriate probabilistic model to determine the stress distribution. [Pg.173]

It is worth remarking that though Moore (/35), who used light scattering to study polyethylene, stated the theory of this method, the estimates of the degree of branching that he presented were actually derived from values of via Beasley s theory (S). [Pg.39]

Currently, there is a commonly expressed view that decreased cortical volume in schizophrenia is the result of a reduction of cortical neuropil, presumably due to an atrophy of neural dendrites and axons (e.g., (Selemon and Goldman-Rakic, 1999)). A direct prediction of this model is that neuron density should be increased in proportion to the decrease in cortical volume. While there is some evidence for increased density in the prefrontal cortex (Selemon et al., 1995, 2003), there are also a number of negative findings (Akbarian et al., 1995 Cotter et al., 2002 Cullen et al., 2006 Thune et al., 2001). In auditory areas, the available studies have not shown an altered neuron density, even with hemispheric comparisons (Beasley et al., 2005 Cotter et al., 2004 Smiley et al., 2002). An alternative hypothesis is that reduced cortical volume is accompanied by a loss of neuron number, but this issue remains to be addressed in the auditory cortex. In other brain areas, there is some evidence for decreased neuron number, although the differences are often subtle and statistically nonsignificant (Benes et al., 1986 Dorph-Petersen et al., 2007 Stark et al., 2004 Thune et al., 2001). Changes in total cell number in the cerebral cortex have been difficult to determine, because these measurements require a clearly identified reference volume. [Pg.372]

Ultrastructural studies have not resolved the question about how much edema is present in the airway mucosa of asthmatics. In some ultrastructiual studies, a widening of intercellular spaces has been interpreted as evidence of mucosal edema (Laitinen and Laitinen, 1988 Beasley et al., 1989) however, in others no ultrastructural evidence of edema was detected in mucosal biopsies from asthmatics having a wide range of severity of disease (Laitinen et al., 1985 Jeffery et al., 1989). Furthermore, there is a report that the incidence of mucosal edema in the airways of patients with asthma or chronic bronchitis is about the same as that in the airways of normal subjects (Salvato, 1968). A possible explanation for this finding is... [Pg.149]
