This typical behavior of the very unsymmetrical thiazole ring led to a series of studies from the group of H. Erlenmeyer in Basle be studied the H/D exchange of 2,4-dimethyl-5-carboxythia2ole as well as that of similar methylated nitrogen heterocycles (507). The results are shown in Fig. 1-27.

After completing his medical studies in 1721, he applied for a chair at Basle, but like his father before him, he lost out in a lottery. Disappointed with his lack of success, he accepted an invitation from Catherine I, Empress ol Russia, to become Professor of Mathematics at the Imperial Academy in St. 

By 1730 Bernoulli longed to return to Basle, but despite numerous attempts, he lost out in ballots for academic positions until 1732. However, in 1734 the French Academy of Sciences awarded a joint prize to Daniel and his father in recognition of their work. Johann found it difficult to admit that his son was at least his equal, and once again the house of Bernoulli was divided. 

After the dispute with his father in 1734, Daniel Bernoulli lost much of his drive to study mathematics and turned his attention to medicine and physiology. Finally, in 1750, Daniel was appointed chair of physics at Basle, where he taught until his death on March 17, 1782.

In 1969 a serious explosion took place in Basle when 287 kg (1.3 kmol) of 2-chloro-4,6-dinitroaniline was diazotized in 384 kg 40% nitrosylsulfuric acid. The temperature was increased from 30 °C to 50 °C and kept at that level. Shortly afterwards the explosion occurred three workers were killed and 31 injured, some seriously. The reaction had been carried out twice before in the same way without difficulty. Detailed investigations (Bersier et al., 1971) with the help of differential scanning calorimetry showed that, at the high concentration of that batch, a strongly exothermic reaction (1500 kJ/kg) starts at about 77 °C. In contrast, when the reactants were diluted with 96% sulfuric acid to twice the volume, the reaction was found to begin at 146 °C, generating only 200 kJ/kg.
