Metal Hydrides. Metal hydrides generally react readily with acetylenes, often by an insertion mechanism. Cobalt hydrocarbonyl gives complicated mixtures of compounds with acetylenes. The only products which have been identified so far are dicobalt hexacarbonyl acetylene complexes (34). Greenfield reports that, under conditions of the hydroformy lation reaction, acetylenes give only small yields of saturated monoaldehydes (30), probably formed by first hydrogenating the acetylene and then reacting with the olefin. Other workers have identified a variety of products from acetylene, carbon monoxide, and an alcohol with a cobalt catalyst, probably cobalt hydrocarbonyl. The major products observed were succinate esters (74,19) and succinate half ester acetals (19). [Pg.193]

Although mechanisms have been advanced to account for the formation of the majority of the identified products from acetylenes and nitrogen-containing heterocycles, most are based on plausible analogies or on the trapping of an occasional postulated intermediate. Genuine mechanistic studies have been carried out for very few of the reactions noted in this review. [Pg.268]

This evidence that benzyne is at least one of the intermediates in acetylene pyrolysis has many implications. However, as the ratios of products from acetylene and hexafluorobenzene differ appreciably from those obtained from phthalic anhydride, it might be best at this point to call acetylene a benzynoid precursor. Additional data will be needed and are being accumulated to determine to what extent acetylene reactions proceed at high temperatures through a benzyne intermediate (Fields and Meyerson, 1967a). [Pg.57]

Alcohols can undergo photoaddition to alkynes, and the products from acetylenic esters are Y-hydroxy-rra//j-a,j3-unsaturated esters or the unsaturated lactones derived from the cis isomers by cyclization (equation 21).
