Barrel storage

Sotolon (3-hydroxy-4,5-dimethyl-2(5H)-furanone) concentration in Poit correlates positively with years of barrel storage aging. Within certain limits Sotolon concentration can also correlate with the intensity of typical aroma descriptors nutty , spicy and the perceived age of barrel stored Port wine. This phenomenon can be demonstrated even with Sotolon additions to unaged base port. 

In September 1996, two containers with barrels filled with tritium-contaminated waste were stored within the cover of the safe enclosure. The 16 D350-barrels of high-grade steel were filled and sealed at the Karlsruhe research center. Due to the high tritium inventory of the barrels, storage at the final repository Morsleben is not possible today. The tritium-activity amounts to 2.9E+12 Bq per Barrel. 

Petroleum storage and transfer units exceeding 300,000-barrel storage... 

The legs of the platform can be used as settling tanks or temporary storage facilities for crude oil where oil is exported via tankers, or to allow production to continue in the event of a pipeline shut down. The Brent D platform in the North Sea weighs more than 200,000 tonnes and can store over a million barrels of oil. Topside modules are either installed offshore by lift barges, or can be positioned before the platform is floated out. 

The process capability for FPSOs is up to some 100,000 barrels per day, with storage capacity up to 800,000bbls. 

Maturation regimes vary from as tittle change as possible in many white and pink wines (stainless steel tanks, cool storage, minimum time) to considerable modification in red table and a few white table wines. Fermentation and storage in fairly new 200-L barrels for about 6 mo is not uncommon for Chardoimay and white Burgundy wines. Many robust red table wines such as those from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are often stored similarly, after fermentation and initial clarification, for up to about 3 yr in such barrels. 

Brewing Austenitic steels are used in fermentation vessels, storage tanks and attemperators, in yeast processing, and for transport tanks and barrels. 

Under U.S. regulations. Grades No. 1, No. 1 Low Sulfur, No. 2, No. 2 Low Sulfur, and No. 4 (Light) are required by 40 CFR Part 80 to contain a sufficient amount of the dye Solvent Red 164 so its presence is visually apparent. At or beyond terminal storage tanks, they are required by 26 CFR Part 48 to contain the dye Solvent Red 164 at a concentration spectrally equivalent to 3.9 lb per thousand barrels of the solid dye standard Solvent Red 26. 

Water storage Plastic rain barrels are relatively cheap and come in many sizes some are made from recycled plastic, which is a bonus. Wooden barrels are undoubtedly more attractive, but they do tend to leak if not kept completely full. 

In barrel-aged red, white, and model wines, naturally occurring furfuryl alcohol decreased in concentration with time. In red wine, furfuryl ethyl ether was identified as a degradation product after 55 wk of storage. The average percentage decrease of furfuryl alcohol was 73% (Spillman et al, 1998).
