Barr

The Wellcome Physiological Research Laboratories, Beckenham, Kent, hired a significant number of women chemists and biochemists as an example, we have chosen Mollie Barr.54 Barr was born on 11 June 1906, the daughter of Horace C. Barr, a burial practitioner, and Edith Barr of Belvedere, Kent. She was educated at several schools, the last being Blackheath High School, London (a GPDSC school). 

Barr completed a B.Sc. in chemistry at Bedford in 1927, and was then awarded a 3-year grant from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) to work towards her Ph.D. on molten salt electrolysis under James Spencer. However, Barr terminated her research in 1928 with an M.Sc.

FIAC also strongly inhibits HCMV and Epstein-Barr vims (EBV) in vitro the two vimses known not to induce a specific viral thymidine kinase for their repHcation. However, HCMV may stimulate cellular kinases that can anabolize FIAC to its 5 -triphosphate, which specifically inhibits the HCMV-encoded DNA polymerase. This selective activity suggests that FIAC should be evaluated against HCMV infections. FIAC-ttiphosphate incorporated into DNA has shown strong in vitro activity against the DNA polymerases of human hepatitis B vims (HBV) and of woodchuck hepatitis vims (WHV) (37).
