In general, bacterial mutagenicity assays rely on one of three mutational schemes reverse mutation, forward mutation, and DNA damage. 

Nitromethane has given consistently negative results in bacterial mutagenicity assays, and in vitro mammalian tests for sister chromatid exchanges and chromosomal aberrations. It was not mutagenic in Drosophila. It did not induce micronuclei in vitro in Syrian hamster embryo cells or in vivo in mice. However, nitromethane did show a positive response at high concentration in a cell transformation assay in Syrian hamster embryo cells. The results of shortterm tests on nitromethane do not indicate that the compound has genotoxic activity.

A slight mutagenic effect of horseradish paste was observed in bacterial mutagenicity assays. The effect was significantly less than that of cabbage or Brussels sprouts (Kassie et al. 1996). Antimutagenic activity of horseradish was observed in rat bone marrow cells (Agabeili and Kasimova 2005). 

No mutagenic or carcinogenic effects of eleuthero extracts were observed in bacterial mutagenicity assays or in rats (Hirosue et al. 1986). 

The isoamylase enzyme preparation that was evaluated is obtained by pure culture fermentation of Pseudomonas amyloderamosa. The Committee reviewed toxicological data on this enzyme at its fifty-fifth meeting (Annex 1, reference 149) as part of the safety assessment of trehalose. The Committee at that meeting concluded that the available data on isoamylase (i.e. a study of acute toxicity, a 13-week study of toxicity and a bacterial mutagenicity assay) did not raise any safety concern. 

Vanadium (V) compounds (NH4VO3 and V2O5) gave inconclusive results in bacterial mutagenicity assays (Hansen and Stern 1984). These compounds act as clastogens and induce SCEs in some studies but not in others. Recently, NH4VO3 was shown to be a weak mutagen in V79 cells at the hprt locus and in G12 at the gpt locus (Cohen et al. 1992). DNA-protein cross-links were seen in V(V)-treated cells in the same study.
