For hquid systems v is approximately independent of velocity, so that a plot of JT versus v provides a convenient method of determining both the axial dispersion and mass transfer resistance. For vapor-phase systems at low Reynolds numbers is approximately constant since dispersion is determined mainly by molecular diffusion. It is therefore more convenient to plot H./v versus 1/, which yields as the slope and the mass transfer resistance as the intercept. Examples of such plots are shown in Figure 16. [Pg.265]

The two models commonly used for the analysis of processes in which axial mixing is of importance are (1) the series of perfectly mixed stages and (2) the axial-dispersion model. The latter, which will be used in the following, is based on the assumption that a diffusion process in the flow direction is superimposed upon the net flow. This model has been widely used for the analysis of single-phase flow systems, and its use for a continuous phase in a two-phase system appears justified. For a dispersed phase (for example, a bubble phase) in a two-phase system, as discussed by Miyauchi and Vermeulen, the model is applicable if all of the dispersed phase at a given level in a column is at the same concentration. Such will be the case if the bubbles coalesce and break up rapidly. However, the model is probably a useful approximation even if this condition is not fulfilled. It is assumed in the following that the model is applicable for a continuous as well as for a dispersed phase in gas-liquid-particle operations. [Pg.87]

Values for the various parameters in these equations can be estimated from published correlations. See Suggestions for Further Reading. It turns out, however, that bubbling fluidized beds do not perform particularly well as chemical reactors. At or near incipient fluidization, the reactor approximates piston flow. The small catalyst particles give effectiveness factors near 1, and the pressure drop—equal to the weight of the catalyst—is moderate. However, the catalyst particles are essentially quiescent so that heat transfer to the vessel walls is poor. At higher flow rates, the bubbles promote mixing in the emulsion phase and enhance heat transfer, but at the cost of increased axial dispersion. [Pg.416]

Washout experiments can be used to measure the residence time distribution in continuous-flow systems. A good step change must be made at the reactor inlet. The concentration of tracer molecules leaving the system must be accurately measured at the outlet. If the tracer has a background concentration, it is subtracted from the experimental measurements. The flow properties of the tracer molecules must be similar to those of the reactant molecules. It is usually possible to meet these requirements in practice. The major theoretical requirement is that the inlet and outlet streams have unidirectional flows so that molecules that once enter the system stay in until they exit, never to return. Systems with unidirectional inlet and outlet streams are closed in the sense of the axial dispersion model i.e., Di = D ut = 0- See Sections 9.3.1 and 15.2.2. Most systems of chemical engineering importance are closed to a reasonable approximation. [Pg.541]

Checks on the relationships between the axial coefficients were provided in empty tubes with laminar flow by Taylor (T2), Blackwell (B15), Bournia et al. (B19), and van Deemter, Breeder and Lauwerier (V3), and for turbulent flow by Taylor (T4) and Tichacek et al. (T8). The agreement of experiment and theory in all of these cases was satisfactory, except for the data of Boumia et al. as discussed previously, their data indicated that the simple axial-dispersed plug-flow treatment may not be valid for laminar flow of gases. Tichacek et al. found that the theoretical calculations were extremely sensitive to the velocity profile. Converse (C20), and Bischoff and Levenspiel (B14) showed that rough agreement was also obtained in packed beds. Here, of course, the theoretical calculation was very approximate because of the scatter in packed-bed velocity-profile data. [Pg.139]
