For administrative purposes, it is desirable that the boundaries of an air quality control region be the same as those of major political jurisdictions. Therefore, when the first air quality control regions were officially designated in the United States by publication of their boundaries in the Federal Register, the boundaries given were those of the counties all or part of which were within the background concentration isopleth. 

The determinant may be present in biological specimens collected from subjects who have not been occupationally exposed, at a concentration which could affect interpretation of the result. Such background concentrations are incorporated in the BEI value. 

Washout experiments can be used to measure the residence time distribution in continuous-flow systems. A good step change must be made at the reactor inlet. The concentration of tracer molecules leaving the system must be accurately measured at the outlet. If the tracer has a background concentration, it is subtracted from the experimental measurements. The flow properties of the tracer molecules must be similar to those of the reactant molecules. It is usually possible to meet these requirements in practice. The major theoretical requirement is that the inlet and outlet streams have unidirectional flows so that molecules that once enter the system stay in until they exit, never to return. Systems with unidirectional inlet and outlet streams are closed in the sense of the axial dispersion model i.e., Di = D ut = 0- See Sections 9.3.1 and 15.2.2. Most systems of chemical engineering importance are closed to a reasonable approximation. 

Thirdly, and most importantly, the conditional cdf Fx(z (N)) is dependent on data values accounting for the possi e difference in spatial correlation between high-valued concentration data and background concentration data. This fact stems from the process of estimation of Fx(z (N)) itself described in a later section. 

Pesticides are one of the main factors threatening biodiversity on the planet. In the near future, pesticide effects on animals will not lessen, but grow background concentrations of some pesticides have almost reached levels that seriously affect life processes. 

To establish the well drainage boundaries and fluid flow patterns within the TFSA-waterflood pilot, an interwell chemical tracer study was conducted. Sodium thiocyanate was selected as the tracer on the basis of its low adsorption characteristics on reservoir rocks (36-38), its low and constant background concentration (0.9 mg/kg) in produced fluids and its ease and accuracy of analysis(39). On July 8, 1986, 500 lb (227 kg) of sodium thiocyanate dissolved in 500 gal (1.89 m3> of injection brine (76700 mg/kg of thiocyanate ion) were injected into Well TU-120. For the next five months, samples of produced fluids were obtained three times per week from each production well. The thiocyanate concentration in the produced brine samples were analyzed in duplicate by the standard ferric nitrate method(39) and in all cases, the precision of the thiocyanate determinations were within 0.3 mg/kg. The concentration of the ion in the produced brine returned to background levels when the sampling and analysis was concluded.
