He chaired the Gordon Research Conference on Catalysis in 1957 and was Associate Editor (1984-88) and a member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Catalysis. He served on National Research Council committees, IUPAC committees, the Petroleum Research Fund Advisory Board, the National Science Foundation...

His expertise in the field of reverse osmosis involved him in organizing two sessions on reverse osmosis in separation processes for the Gordon Research Conferences in 1982. He initiated, organized, and acted as chairman of the first session on reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration processes of the Gordon Research Conferences in 1983 and was an invited speaker on reverse osmosis at the Gordon Research Conferences in 1985. He is a member of the ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents and the American Society for Testing and Materials, D-19.06. 

A member of the National Academy of Sciences, Paul Emmett received numerous honorary degrees, awards, and medals in the United States, Europe, and Japan. His name has been immortalized through the Paul H. Emmett Award in Fundamental Catalysis administered by the Catalysis Society of North America. With over 150 research publications during his lifetime, Emmett was for 10 years an associate editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society. His membership in the ACS spanned over 60 years, and he served as a Councilor from the Pittsburgh section during the early 1950s. Emmett attended the very first Gordon Research Conference in 1931 and occupied a front row seat at each of the GRC Conferences on Catalysis until his death. Twice he served as chairman of that annual conference.

We would like to add that Peter was an invited speaker at the Symposium on Molecular Mechanics (held in Indianapolis in 1983) and was co-chairman of the second Gordon Research Conference on Computational Chemistry in 1988. As we pointed out in the Preface of Volume 13 (p. xiii) of this book series, no one had been cited more frequently in Reviews of Computational Chemistry than Peter. Peter—and the others—will be missed. 

Transition-element compounds have been discussed by various authors, e.g. Aronsson, Lundstrom and Rundqvist (7, 2), Goodenough (3), Jelli-nek (4) and Schubert (5), who treated this subject from different points of view. The present review article evolved from a talk on transition-element compounds of composition TX2, given at a Gordon Research Conference in Andover (Mass.) in 1965. Most of these TX2 phases are polycompounds and it is, in fact, the polycompounds that attracted my interest primarily (6, 7). The term polycompound is used to describe phases in which, in addition to the usual cation-anion bonds, there exist bonds between like atoms. If these additional bonds occur between anions one...
