Kato and Wen (5) found, for the case of packed beds, that there was a dependency of the Sherwood and Nusselt numbers with the ratio dp/L. They proposed that the fall of the heat and mass transfer coefficients at low Reynolds numbers is due to an overlapping of the boundary layers surrounding the particles which produces a reduction of the available effective area for transfer of mass and heat. Nelson and Galloway W proposed a new model in terms of the Frossling number, to explain the fall of the heat and mass transfer coefficients in the zone of low Reynolds numbers. [Pg.186]

Twenty years ago Car and Parrinello introduced an efficient method to perform Molecular Dynamics simulation for classical nuclei with forces computed on the fly by a Density Functional Theory (DFT) based electronic calculation [1], Because the method allowed study of the statistical mechanics of classical nuclei with many-body electronic interactions, it opened the way for the use of simulation methods for realistic systems with an accuracy well beyond the limits of available effective force fields. In the last twenty years, the number of applications of the Car-Parrinello ab-initio molecular d3mam-ics has ranged from simple covalent bonded solids, to high pressure physics, material science and biological systems. There have also been extensions of the original algorithm to simulate systems at constant temperature and constant pressure [2], finite temperature effects for the electrons [3], and quantum nuclei [4]. [Pg.643]

Selection of a suitable binder that is cheap, easily available, effective, and produces a permanent bond. [Pg.403]

In respect of potential CN terrorism we believe that the following three critical items should be added to the CDC recommendations. First, before antidotes are stockpiled there should be international agreement on the most appropriate antidote (or combinations) for the treatment of acute CN poisoning. It is our opinion that hydroxocobalamin is the optimum choice. In the context of mass casualty situations with terrorist release of cyanides on the public, the chosen antidote should be readily available, effective, easy to administer (even by responders with limited training), nontoxic, and does not adversely interact with other antidotes (Thompson, 2004). Second, with respect to CN analyses, there is a requirement for a portable equipment that is specific and, at least semiquantitative, that can be used for on-site reliable bioidentification of CN intoxication. There is also a need for a reliable and sensitive environmental method for the instantaneous measurement of HCN concentrations, and ideally continuous monitoring with automatic warning devices for installation in sites with a potential for HCN attack. Third, educational materials should be made immediately available for distribution to the general population so that they can be prepared for what to expect in the event of a CN terrorism event. [Pg.333]

The available effective antiretroviral drugs are limited in number and mechanism of action, and cross-resistance between specific drugs has been documented. Therefore, any change in antiretroviral therapy increases future therapeutic constraints. [Pg.2260]

Much of the delay was attributed to the shortage of suitable labour. By the middle of 1942 there were 8,500 labourers on site, but in order to keep to schedule the MAP needed at least 1000 more men. The MOWB was inexplicably reluctant to agree to this and was accused of working to its own agenda in not making sufficient labour available, effectively dictating completion dates rather than working towards them. [Pg.104]

However, larger alkanes with more than two carbon atoms which have kinetic diameters of more than 4.3 A, cyclohexane with a kinetic diameter of 6.0 A, and even larger and more viscous oil constituents like polyaromatic compounds, steranes, hopanes, resins and asphaltenes, are unable to move through the caprock, partly clogging the available effective permeability, and hence remain in the trap (cf. Karlsen 1987 ... [Pg.312]

Means must be available, effective, and used to treat exposed individuals outside the plant. [Pg.355]

When a facility is capable of producing more product than is required by the market, then the term effectiveness is used instead of availability. Effectiveness is defined in Eq. (16.2). [Pg.675]

Without decontamination substances there will be a lack of ability to continue missions in both the near- and long-term. While fighting contaminated might be effective for an individual campaign, it is not effective for a war. Having available effective decontamination substance(s) available when necessary is essential for the warfighting equipment and for all supporting equipment. It is also necessary to have wide-area decontamination substances and delivery methods available for battle spaces, and especially necessary for civilian areas. Appropriate consideration of concept of operations (CONOPs) will enable DoD to develop different... [Pg.75]

Any good quality-assurance system should also assess the quality of performance in practice as well as in theory. With no currently available, effective, non-destructive test, critical areas or components may only be assessed for voids (acoustic methods are useful here) and, where possible, proof loaded. Other than this, test coupons or parts need to accompany the components themselves through the assembly process so that appropriate, systematic destructive tests may be carried out. A check-list for safety critical items is given in Table 6.1. [Pg.125]

In his pharmacy in Uppsala, Scheele s working place at that time, there was no furnace available effective enough to reduce a metal from pyrolusite. But Scheele s good friend J. G. Gahn in Falun had such a furnace. Scheele prepared a sample of pure py-... [Pg.634]
