Automobile alternator

Diodes are used with automobile alternators to produce the DC voltage required for automobile electrical systems. 

In the automotive market, cyanoacrylates are used to bond weatherstripping to automotive bodies and to position rubber gaskets before assembly. They are used to bond polycarbonate positioning clips to side windows of automobiles, alternator horn assembly components, and rubber gaskets to automotive thermostats. One of the most common automotive applications is the use of cyanoacrylates in the repair of flexible PVC side trim strips. 

System rehabihty is improved by providing alternative means for performing the same task. For example, automobiles were equipped with hand cranks even though they had electric starters. This back-up equipment was provided because at that time starters were unrehable. In contemporary system design, factors such as added cost, weight, and space may prohibit the use of redundant systems. 

In 1995, about 28-30 x 10 tires were retreaded (54). Retreading has been the most cost-effective alternative to recycling mbber. However, worn retreaded tires usually are discarded in a landfill. Approximately 10% of discarded automobile tires and 55—70% of tmck and bus tires are retreaded (55). 

Attempts to produce synthetic mbber have been carried out since the 1800s. The introduction of automobiles in the early 1900s gave added impetus to find a substitute for natural mbber, the price of which tripled from 2.16/kg in 1900 to 6.73/kg in 1910 (1). The advent of World War I gave Germany incentive to start a crash program on an alternative to natural mbber. From this work, products based on dimethylbutadiene were used, but these were not found to be good substitutes.

Automotive air conditioning - The manufacturers of new automobiles have chosen HFC-134a as the fluid for air conditioning units, and retrofit kits are now available to allow older automobiles to convert to this alternative. 

However, the benefits of air transportation, primarily speed, make it an attractive alternative for longer trips. These benefits have justified the expenditure of large amounts of money for providing extensive layers of protection to overcome the inherent hazards of air travel. The result is that air travel, while inherently more hazardous, is in fact safer than automobile travel for long trips. Similar situations can be expected to occur in the chemical process industry. 

Today belts are used in automobiles to drive aux-iliaiy devices such as air conditioning, power brakes, power steering, the alternator, and the cooling fluid pump. Belts also can be found in household appliances such as vacuum sweepers, on lathes in machine shops, or inside copying machines.
