SO that the branches in Figure 5.15 are both S branches (although some authors refer to the anti-Stokes S branch as an O branch). [Pg.128]

Many preliminary analyses of gas turbines are based on the assumption of a closed air standard cyclic plant, and for such analyses the use of tj as a thermal efficiency is entirely correct (as discussed in the early part of Chapter 3 of this book). But most practical gas turbines are of the open type and the rational efficiency should strictly be used, or at least its approximate form, the arbitrary overall efficiency tjq. We have followed this practice in the latter part of Chapter 3 and subsequent chapters even though some engineers consider this differentiation to be a somewhat pedantic point and many authors refer to tjo as a thermal efficiency (or sometimes the lower heating value thermal efficiency ). [Pg.6]

As the distance between the two particles varies, they are subject to these long-range r " attractive forces (which some authors refer to collectively as van der Waals forces). Upon very close approach they will experience a repulsive force due to electron-electron repulsion. This repulsive interaction is not theoretically well characterized, and it is usually approximated by an empirical reciprocal power of distance of separation. The net potential energy is then a balance of the attractive and repulsive components, often described by Eq. (8-16), the Lennard-Jones 6-12 potential. [Pg.393]

Hydrophobicity ( water-hate ) can dominate the behavior of nonpolar solutes in water. The key observations are (1) that very nonpolar solutes (such as saturated hydrocarbons) are nearly insoluble in water and (2) that nonpolar solutes in water tend to form molecular aggregates. Some authors refer to item 1 as the hydrophobic effect and to item 2 as the hydrophobic interaction. Two extreme points of view have been taken to account for these observations. [Pg.395]

Some authors refer to improper dihedrals when discussing dihedral torsion where we would not normally expect full rotation, for example, any of the C-C-C-C linkages in the benzene ring of aspirin. Many MM force fields treat... [Pg.40]

Most authors refer to the x s as basis functions. These usually overlap each other, and I will collect their overlap integrals into the n x n matrix S as in Chapter 5 ... [Pg.114]

References are given in alphabetical order with respect to the first mentioned author of a paper or a book. If there is only one author, all references are given chronologically. If there are also references citing this author with one coauthor, these references are added afterwards, but in alphabetical order of the second authors. References citing the first author with two or more coauthors are added in chronological (not alphabetical) order. [Pg.405]

The rate of a second-order reaction may be proportional to two concentrations, v = [A][B] with [B]0 s> [A]o it follows first-order kinetics. Some authors refer to these as the order with respect to concentration and the order with respect to time. [Pg.16]

Before we discuss the merits of kss versus kpe, we shall consider one other approximate solution. Some authors refer to it as the improved steady-state solution. 2 We shall present two derivations. In the first, the approximation for d[ ]/dt is refined by differentiating the steady-state expression for [I]ss, which gives... [Pg.87]

Sulfonyl radicals are often represented simply as XS02 where the sulfur atom is understood to be bonded to two oxygens as well as to X the moiety X may be an alkyl, aryl, amino or alkoxy group. The unpaired electron does not reside on one particular atom but rather it extends over all atoms of the S02 group. It should be noted that in recent literature some authors refer to alkanethiyl peroxyl radicals, the adduct of alkanethiyl (RS ) to molecular oxygen, as RS02 rather than RSOO and the fact has already caused some inconvenience. [Pg.1089]

Sorensen, E. J. Classics in Total Synthesis VCH New York, 1996 Chapter 31. These authors refer to the Heck reaction as "one of the true "power tools" of contemporary organic synthesis" (p. 566). [Pg.37]

The experimental data obtained in conventional size channels and micro-channels with diameters between 100 pm and 6.0 mm are examined to further elucidate and understand the differences in two-phase flow characteristics between the microchannels and conventional size channels. Since two separate sets of experiments have been conducted using air and water in acrylic channels with diameters between 500 pm and 6.0 mm, and nitrogen gas-water in fused silica channels with diameters between 50 and 500 pm, the authors refer to the former channels as conventional size channels, and the latter channels as micro-channels for convenience. Two different inlet sections were covered in micro-channel experiments, a gradually reducing section and a T-junction. [Pg.250]

Summary and conclusions The Inspector(s) should state whether, within the scope of the inspection, the company operates in accordance with the EU GMP Rules provided, where relevant, that appropriate corrective actions are implemented and mention any other item to alert requesting authority. Reference may be made to conclusions recorded in other documents, such as the close-out letter, depending on national procedures. [Pg.252]

Another fourteenth century text, the Aurora Consurgens, similarly provides a lengthy eschatological account in the course of which the author refers to Paul s doctrine of the resurrection of the body. The Sixth Parable explains in detail the analogy between the philosopher s stone and the Second Adam who is Christ in his Eucharistic form. [Pg.59]

Drastic sampling and subjective judgment was required to condense 40 years of research in heterogeneous catalysis into a few thousand words. There might be rather little overlap between this paper and that with the same title written by another author. References have been omitted to avoid presenting a sampling of names with the implication that they alone were responsible for the advances. [Pg.68]

The authors refer to compound 9 as a monomer with tapered side chains and have only recently begun to use dendrimer terminology. Since the side chain meets the criteria for a G-l dendron, compound 9 is considered here. [Pg.201]

Sheridan and co-workers reported a novel photo-assisted [5 + 2 + 2]-reaction based on the reactions of 77S-cyclodienyl Mn complexes160,161 or Cr complexes162 and two alkynes. Decomplexation of the metal gives cycloadducts in moderate to good overall yields (Scheme 66, Equation (42), and Scheme 67). It should be noted that the authors refer to this reaction as a [5 + 2]-, [3 + 2]- or a [5 + 2]-, homo-[5 + 2]-reaction. This reaction leads to the formation of impressively complex tricyclic products that would be otherwise difficult to prepare with step economy. [Pg.636]

Harris et al. also employed a less-known CCK procedure, which Meehl and Yonce (1996) named SQUABAC, but the authors referred to as the Parabolic Function Method. Two SQUABAC analyses were performed, one with the PCL-R total score as the input variable and criminal recidivism as the output variable, and another with adult criminal history and recidivism as input and output variables, respectively. Recidivism history was paired with the two potential taxon indicators because it is a conceptually related but distinct variable. It is expected to be a valid indicator of the taxon, but it is not redundant with other indicators, thus nuisance correlations should not be a problem. [Pg.136]
