Auger mixers

A mechanical device spiral in form or appearance a conveyor working on the principle of a screw a conveying tool in a feeder, mixer, or extruder. Also auger, worm. Extruder in which screw(s) produce the extrusion pressure. 

Multiple shaft extruders. Some publications quote a classification for multiple shaft extruders referring to combined de-airing extrusion units defined by the sum of their auger shafts, infeed shafts and mixer shafts. This method of categorization is, however, disputed.

The type of combined de-airing extrusion machine can be defined by, amongst other aspects, the configuration of the auger and mixer shafts, by the method of coimection between the extruder and de-airing mixer, as well as by the construction of the de-airing mixer. One differentiates the features accordingly, as shown below ...

The fixed ratio of the auger and mixer shaft speeds resulting from this type of construction is of a disadvantage, especially as this cannot subsequently be altered. There are however gearboxes with two-stage switch-gear, which allow the speeds to be changed. 

In the 1960s Messrs. Uniceram SA of Marseille, France, built a hydraulically-driven piston extruder for the stiff extrusion of structural clay products, combined with a de-airing double-shaft mixer, was operated as a combined de-airing extrusion unit (Fig. 5). On the whole however the piston extruder has been of relatively little importance in comparison to the auger extruder within the field of structural ceramics.

Handle are the first on the market in Europe with a combined deairing extrusion machine with a double-shaft mixer, shredder device, vacuum chamber and auger extruder...

The rubber, pellets, and powders are fed to the continuous mixer at the feed throat. The plasticizer, extender oil, or any other liquid components are fed downstream, usually at the third or fourth barrel. Other solid additives could also be added to the mixer using a top feeder or a side feeder at a barrel located further downstream. If the additives have a low melting point, adding them from the top with an auger-type of feeder is a better choice. 

Pug. A machine for consolidating plastic clay or body into a firm column. It consists of a steel cylinder ( barrel ) which tapers at one end to a die, through which the clay or body is forced by knives mounted on a shaft which rotates centrally to the barrel (cf. auger and mixer). 

After mixing the aggiegates and water thoroughly for about five minutes, the blended binder was loaded manually into the tmck mixer. It had been planned to load the blended binder into the truck mixer using an auger system but a scheduling problem meant that the binder had to be loaded by hand (Figures 90 and 91).
