The Vulcan gun, previously used as aircraft armament at rates as high as 6000 rds/minute, has been modified for the air defense application to provide alternative firing rates of 1000 and 3000 rds/minute. There are many options for barrel material construction with most extruder barrel designed to withstand up to at least 10,000 psi (69 MPa) internal pressures higher pressure units [30,000 psi (210 MPa)] are manufactured for the injection molding processes since they operate at higher pressures. They have a minimum safety burst pressure of at least 50,000 psi (350 MPa). The need for corrosion and/or wear protection, cost, repair, or their combinations may determine the choice of materials. They can be made from a solid piece of metal. The most common material is carbon steel.6...

On the cylindrical part of the core barrel in the zone of flow separator the compensating plates are placed with the help of which the design value of mounting clearance is achieved. In heating-up the reactor vessel and internals this clearance is decreased and the core barrel is clamped to the flow separator over the whole perimeter that reduces the vibration loads on the core barrel. Design of the core baffle channels is changed to smooth temperature fields in the baffle and to decrease the resulted deformations of the baffle.

Once a feed strategy is identified, appropriate screw configuration and barrel design for commercial extrusion must be identified (Schenck ef al. 2011).
