Most household and entertainment appliances are mass-production goods that are sold by the million. Production of business or office appliances varies from small series (shredders, for example) to medium or high series (PCs and other computers). Prices are very varied from a few tens of euros up to thousands of euros and more. Table 2.35 provides an idea of the economic importance of some typical devices. 

Rotational speeds are very low, in most cases ranging between 50 and 200 RPM. The low-speed hydraulic motors develop very high torques on the shafts, providing considerable shearing power to the cutting discs. This power makes shear shredders effective in difificult-to-cut materials. This equipment has been used to shred materials such as metals, truck and car tires, wood, pallets, bulky objects, and electrical and electronic devices, for example, in relatively coarse particle size. Models of shredders are offered with from one to six cutting shafts. Machines with a capacity of many tones per hour are available. They are able to reduce complete bales of film fed by forklift without any difficulty. Also, hollow items such as rubbish bins and barrels can be reduced when a ram is fitted to the feed. Another field of application is the shredding of cables to allow the separation of plastics and metal. Generally, a trough fed by a forklift or conveyor is located above the shredder shafts. After the material is reduced to a practical size in the shredder, it is transported to subsequent process stages by means of a conveyor or other mechanical device. 

The screw shredder mentioned earlier as a machine for debaling is also used for the initial size reduction of plastic items, and in particular when these are very voluminous and not too tough. It is suited for very large items or bundles of material and has the advantage of being fitted with a very large feed hopper that can be filled by bucket loader or similar device.
