Meridional circulation in two-dimensional stratospheric models has been specified based on observations or general circulation model calculations recendy efforts have been undertaken to calculate circulations from first principles, within the stratospheric models themselves. An important limitation of using models in which circulations are specified is that these caimot be used to study the feedbacks of changing atmospheric composition and temperature on transport, factors which may be important as atmospheric composition is increasingly perturbed. [Pg.386]

A number of patents describe accelerators that will reduce the time required for stabilization (24,27,28). The accelerators are often inherent to the polymer or precursor but may be added to the gas phase during stabilization. Meanwhile, Crutzen had done experiments showing that ozone in the upper atmosphere can be destroyed easily by reactions with nitrogen oxides. This work demonstrated that the ozone layer is in a delicate balance that could be disturbed significantly by changes in atmospheric composition. Meteors form when meteoroids enter the atmosphere. The mean orbital velocity of the Earth around the Sun is 29.7 kms-1, so a particle stationary in space will enter the Earth s atmosphere at this velocity.
