The neurochemistry of schizophrenia has been considered in a variety of ways by numerous investigators and most have, as here, focussed on the role of abnormalities and/or dysfunction of brain neurotransmitter systems in the disease. Implicit in a book on the neurochemistry of consciousness is the assumption that this chapter will address the neurochemical basis of the disturbance (s) of consciousness that occurs in schizophrenia. Consciousness in its particular and generally-understood meaning is not obviously distorted in schizophrenia, although schizophrenic patients clearly have a different, or abnormal experience of the external world—their conscious awareness is disturbed. 

The pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis remains unclear, although there appears to be a relation to IgE, along with a genetic influence. Although investigators have focused on a dysfunctional immune system, there is no conclusive evidence to support the assumption that cell-mediated response occurs in atopic dermatitis. Elevated serum IgE levels may be found. 

The reduction in the serum value of ceruloplasmin led to the assumption that a primary synthesis disturbance was of particular pathogenic importance. There are several observations which contradict this hypothesis, suggesting that the disturbance in ceruloplasmin synthesis is probably a secondary consequence of the underlying metabolic defect. The introduction of copper into ceruloplasmin is possibly inhibited as a result of a dysfunctional apoprotein of ceruloplasmin. 

There is so far no clear evidence about the different risks of different compounds. The data best fit the assumption that the risk of neutropenia correlates with the cumulative dose, or probably more precisely with the area under the serum concentration versus time curve (AUC). Hence, renal insufficiency is a potential risk factor. In addition, beta-lactam-antibiotic-induced leukopenia has been associated with hepatic dysfunction (76).
